quote:
Rep. Steve Cohen (D-TN) introduced two bills on Thursday, one to eliminate the electoral college and the other to prohibit presidents from pardoning themselves or their family members.

A press release from Cohen's office stated that the "senior member of the House Judiciary Committee, introduced two Constitutional Amendments today on the opening day of the new Congress. The first would eliminate the Electoral College and provide for the direct election of the President and Vice President of the United States. The second would limit the presidential pardon power by prohibiting presidents from pardoning themselves, members of their families, members of their administrations and their campaign staff."

"In two presidential elections since 2000, including the most recent one in which Hillary Clinton won 2.8 million more votes than her opponent, the winner of the popular vote did not win the election because of the distorting effect of the outdated Electoral College," Cohen said. "Americans expect and deserve the winner of the popular vote to win office. More than a century ago, we amended our Constitution to provide for the direct election of U.S. Senators. It is past time to directly elect our President and Vice President.”

"Presidents should not pardon themselves, their families, their administration or campaign staff," Cohen continued. "This constitutional amendment would expressly prohibit this and any future president, from abusing the pardon power."

The Electoral College is embodied in the Constitution in Article 2, Section 1, and in the 12th Amendment. It can't be done away with in a bill.

That jackass, and most Libtards, are too ignorant to know that. They think they can do whatever they please because they’ve been getting away with just that for waaaaay too long. Go pound sand, Cohen.

And who DIDN’T see that coming??

Pound sand indeed. And if a Democrat wins election while losing the popular vote, I’ll say the exact same thing.

I'm thinking that the Electoral College would be the democrats best friend if it had made Hillary the winner and then they wouldn't give a rats ass about disappointing all those Americans who expect a popular vote to determine the winner. Bills like this are gonna pop up weekly for the next two years.

If you read the article it says they introduced two amendments. It goes no where, wastes their time, but provides the feel good fuzzies their constituents want.

Now they can say they Did Something, and when it does go nowhere, they can blame it on Trump, because their waterheaded supporters would believe it if they were told Trump is responsible for shitty crops, or floods. It's all just so much jerking off.

It’s obvious the vast majority of Democrats don’t understand economics based upon their ideals & how they wish to tax and spend. This bill makes it clear, they don’t understand the Constitution either.

And they sre too stupid to realize that if the popular vote was required Trump would have still won.

Trump gamed the sytem by focusing on the electoral votes and did not waste resources in places like CA where he knew he would not win. If the system required the popular vote the Trump campaign would have been completely different and he would have wone the popular vote.

Even if it was possible for the dims to get rid of the electoral college I think it would be the last straw that would make the states call for a constitutional convention and that would not go well for the federal gov.

They are playing to their radical base.
Enough of this nonsense and just maybe some of the more mainstream Democrats will start abandoning the party.
They may realize this sort of crazy stuff is alienating too many that are closer to the center.

Yep. Even if such an amendment (EC) were to pass the House and Senate, there is no way that 38 states would ratify it--there are only 5 or 6 that would benefit from it.

I believe it was posed as a Constitutional Amendment. As such it would have to be passed by 2/3 of both houses of Congress and then ratified by 3/4 of the state legislatures. These are very high hurdles.

It is more than a bit amusing to see people claiming this bill somehow shows a lack of knowledge/respect for the Constitution. Actually a joint resolution from Congress is one of the methods for amending the Constitution.

So those making such claims are really showing their own ignorance, and lack of respect, for the Constitution.

https://www.archives.gov/feder...ution/article-v.html

https://www.archives.gov/feder...egister/constitution

That being said, the odds of getting 2/3 of both the House and the Senate to agree to the amendment is extremely slim.
