UK: Climate protesters throw soup on Van Gogh’s ‘Sunflowers’ Login/Join

Really? Happens to be one of my favorite paintings. Think of another way to protest please. Maybe gluing yourself to your front door. Here is the story:
LONDON (AP) — Climate protesters threw soup over Vincent van Gogh’s “Sunflowers” in London’s National Gallery on Friday to protest fossil fuel extraction, but caused no discernible damage to the glass-covered painting.

The group Just Stop Oil, which wants the British government to halt new oil and gas projects, said activists dumped two cans of tomato soup over the oil painting, one of the Dutch artist’s most iconic works. The two protesters also glued themselves to the gallery wall.

The soup splashed across the glass covering the painting and its gilded frame. The gallery said “there is some minor damage to the frame but the painting is unharmed.” The work is one of several versions of “Sunflowers” that Van Gogh painted in the late 1880s.

London’s Metropolitan Police said officers arrested two people on suspicion of criminal damage and aggravated trespass.

“Specialist officers have now un-glued them and they have been taken into custody to a central London police station,” the force said in a statement.

Just Stop Oil has drawn attention, and criticism, for targeting artworks in museums. In July, Just Stop Oil activists glued themselves to the frame of Leonardo da Vinci’s “The Last Supper” at London’s Royal Academy of Arts, and to John Constable’s “The Hay Wain” in the National Gallery.

Activists have also blocked bridges and intersections across London during two weeks of protests.

The wave of demonstrations comes as the British government opens a new licensing round for North Sea oil and gas exploration, despite criticism from environmentalists and scientists who say the move undermines the country’s commitment to fighting climate change.

Instead of "un gluing" them, just yank their hands off then have maintenance clean up the wall after.

What exactly is the connection between fossil fuels and a deranged, dead Dutch artist who likely never harmed anyone except himself?

Simple attention seeking.

The more outlandish, outrageous, unconventional, bizarre, maybe clever...their actions are, the greater the coverage by the news; demonstrative performance. And, the news will suck it right up, not because they support their cause but, the more stupid they do, the more content for them to 'report' on. Like any good marketing/branding exectuive knows, there's no such thing as bad news. Lay across railroad tracks, chaining themselves to machinery, starvation protest, self immolation...those are a bit more committed than gluing.
At some point, they're gonna go too far and they'll over-step the boundaries of societal tolerance.

I guess my question would be, how did they get there, by plane, train, bus, car.
Somehow they had to use oil to get there.

How to have your argument being taken seriously. First, act like an unhinged lunatic. Second, wonder why your arguments are being laughed at.

Leave them glued to the wall, throw a net over them, tack it down (tightly), and label them as a new work of art, the "Rotting Lunatics." After a week or two, paint them over with tar, you know to keep the smell down. Might start a trend.

Brainwashed by the GDC media into thinking 1 degree C in 100 years means everyone is going to die soon. That's even if we accept "the science".

Brainwashed into thinking hurricanes are getting worse when they are not. Brainwashed to think that deserts with too much development that drain their aquifers is "climate change". Brainwashed to think that fires caused by bad forestry management and over building without buffers is due to "climate change". And so on.

mehhh, these are true-believers, dyed hair, piercings, shit clothing, believes in anarchy, call themselves radical activists....all the hallmarks; media is for the normies. They live in an echo chamber, conceptualizing their utopia, obsessing over identity and intersectionality, while complaining about marginalizations and inequality yet, their very actions perpetuate those beliefs. Attends 4-5 protests a month, independent book sellers, coffee shops and spoken word sessions are their haunts. All their clothing is sourced from consignment shops or, public markets, most definitely vegan. Everyone they associate with is an artist or, a 'creative', hates their parents and instead lives with their 'chosen family'.

Will they be charged and prosecuted for damage? Will the pay for the restoration of the painting?

I'd like to think if I saw this happening, I would just start swinger and punching.

The painting itself was undamaged . Likely nothing will become of them . Maybe probation or some other useless thing . They wanted attention and they got it .

Hope they go to Russia and try this shit. The Russians looted all kinds of precious artwork. I believe much of it is exhibited in Saint Petersburg.
