First-degree corporate abandonment? That’s a new one.

“A Chicago lawmaker has called for criminal charges against the pharmacy chain Walgreens after it closed another location due to rampant crime.

Alderman William Hall made the announcement after the Chatham store on Cottage Grove Ave said they will permanently shut their doors on June 4, 2026.

The store was facing 'significantly higher levels of theft and violent incidents' than other nearby locations, leading to the closure, a Walgreens spokesperson told Block Club Chicago.
……
'Walgreens should be charged with first-degree corporate abandonment,' Alderman Hall said, per the outlet. …”

Wow... just think about that.
The city has made it impossible for Walgreens to operate successfully, by not prosecuting shoplifting, which is an actual crime, and somehow it's Walgreens' fault:

'Despite a range of efforts, including previous operating adjustments, these ongoing safety challenges have made it increasingly difficult to maintain a secure environment for our team members and customers.'

The spokesperson added that safety is the company's top priority despite this difficult decision.

Residents and local lawmakers have rallied to protest the shutdown, warning it will worsen what they describe as a growing pharmacy desert as multiple nearby Walgreens locations close.

'Walgreens should be charged with first-degree corporate abandonment,' Alderman Hall said, per the outlet.

'It should be a crime the way they’re treating our elders [and] our families,' he added.

"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible."

Yeah , let's charge them with a crime that doesn't exist. More grandstanding to divert attention away from those who are really to blame .

As much as I loathe the “it takes a village” bullshit, sometimes it does.
If the village raises a bunch of assholes, whose fault is it?

Then if those assholes rob and plunder certain locations multiple times, because there’s NO REPERCUSSIONS for bad behavior, whose fault is it?

Now we are at the junction (we’ve been here for a little while, actually) where those certain locations are saying “the hell with this! We’re outta here!” Because at the end of the day, theft, pilferage and the violence that often comes with that, matters to the company’s bottom line. So they pack up and leave.

I’ve been through this before, especially in the mostly peaceful summer of 2020.
That location no longer exists in that neighborhood, but it sure the hell does in mine.

Guess who I gotta deal with when I go shopping…

(3 years and counting)

A crime? You mean a crime like theft, robbery or assault? And if you charge them with a crime will they get the same punishment as those who are currently committing the theft, robbery or assault?

You are pandering, fruit loop. You are the problem. This is simply a consequence of the lifestyle you promote.

A little follow-up regarding the store closing

But “crime is down” according to City Officials.
