The candles are BS.

Your ear is designed to produce and exude wax at the appropriate rate. You should normally not try to remove it from the ear canal artificially. If there is an abnormal build up on the inside, see a specialist. Regular Qtips work well for removing ear wax that has made it to the outside.

That's basically what the ENT uses, just a fancy industrial one with variable pressure.

That and a pick and a big magnifying glass.

I was blown away and horrified to see what they pulled out of mine once, years ago.

I had to immediately re-EQ every piece of audio gear I owned after that visit. It was a trip.

Yes, they work great. I use Debrox, then flush with the elephant ear squirt bottle. Those little bulbs that come with Debrox or other softeners are useless.

The doctors always tell you not to stick things in your ear but this doctor uses a paper clip. Open it up and carefully use the larger rounded end as a scoop.

Debrox + shower and rinse ear several times. The when you get out of the shower the elphant washer. You want to aim towards the top part of the opening of the ear canal. The debrox plus shower really softens things up for the elephant ear wash to flush it out.

this is what I do except I don’t open it up. It drives my wife crazy but it works. I use the regular size, not the larger ones.

I had an ear cleaned out at my Dr's office a number of years ago. They mixed 50/50 Hydrogen Peroxide and warm water. Then they used a large syringe to somewhat forcibly irrigate my ear. Ugly stuff emerged and I could hear again.

I have repeated this myself from time to time since with good results.

So I guess all the wax that comes out when I’ve used ear candles is in fact “BS”?? They’re inexpensive and work. Burn one without sticking it in your ear, test it yourself.

Yes indeed, that's exactly what it is.

What you're seeing is created by the candle itself, and the candle setup can't actually pull a vacuum (or enough negative pressure) and thus can't, physically, suck out your ear wax like it is said to do. The crap you're seeing is a false positive, flatly denounced by scientists and medical professionals.

Read up on it, if you still have doubts.

So why is there nothing in it when I’ve burned a test candle and clearly ear wax in the ones held in my ear?

If you have a queazy stomach, I wouldn't recommend searching "ear wax removal" on Youtube...you'll get some pretty nasty returns. Eek

I'm not sure. I'm only going on the advice of a few physicians and having read up on it myself. There's a PDF linked above that explains a lot. Ask your own doctor or ENT. Or maybe one of the medical professionals here knows and can explain.
