Last night some young idiot was texting while driving and, if it weren’t for the awesome EMTs, very nearly got a vehicular manslaughter charge. The info I got was that she went 50mph through a red light. I can’t confirm.

Bro-in-law got a couple broken ribs and a internal arterial break from the impact. The EMTs prepped him for emergency surgery on the way to the hospital. He’s very lucky to still be with us.
He made it through Desert Shield only to almost be taken out by someone that needed to text at that moment.

Please, tell your kids to never text and drive. You just can’t be safe doing it no matter how well you think you’re able.

Driving distracted is a selfish act. I’m sorry your brother-in-law is injured but what a blessing he could be saved. Distracted driving is becoming more common as people begin to think they can manage. At least twice a day I see people delay traffic at intersections because their face in buried in the phone. Then they speed off as if that makes up for their selfishness.

The law in Arizona says that if you touch a phone while driving, you'll be ticketed.

Hands free is okay here, though.

Most women I see driving pay absolutely no attention to the law.

One thing I DRILL into my daughter is we DO NOT SCREW WITH PHONES WHILE DRIVING. Been doing this forever and will continue to do so. I HOPE by the time she is driving that this will be second nature like seatbelts.

Riding my motorcycle gives me a view into the drivers seat of vehicles I pass or while I sit at traffic lights. I would estimate that 6 out of 10 cars I look into, the driver is holding a cell phone down into his lap, so it cant be seen by cops who enforce the hands free law. Cops are doing it too. Most offenders are women and teenagers though.

Yeah, filling in for a summer school driver yesterday. I was stopped and lights flashing and stop sign out. Kid on the ground when some blonde chick blows by me at least 15 mph faster than speed limit right past my bus.

She was fucking around with her phone. Happens all the time.

I didn't get her license number, but nothing would happen most likely anyway.

Anyway, see people on the phone driving all day. Mostly women 20 to 40 years, girls 16 to 20, teen boys, guys 20 to 50, old dudes very rarely.

And it's a hefty fine too in AZ. Around $500.

I was discussing some business, re a complaint that I had filed, with a Volusia County Deputy. We were parked in a school parking lot. A car blew by on the street, way over the speed limit, driver's nose stuck in a phone. Deputy said, "I'll be right back," and departed at a high rate of velocity. He returned shortly, after stopping the offending driver and issuing a ticket.

So terrible, mark, but glad you can report your BIL is in recovery!!

People texting and dicking with their cell phone either stopped or WHILE DRIVING (especially) is one of my YUUUUUUGE pet peeves!!! Ohhhhhhhh...it grinds my gears!!

I leave my phone in my pocket and it does phone calls plus texting just fine through my Bronco's infotainment center.

I almost exclusively voice text. Takes too long to type on a phone screen. I never hold the phone to my ear either. I much prefer hands-free and will actually refused a phone call if I don't have my airpod in. It's much safer to drive this way also

They did the same thing in CA. Horribly corrupt and mostly useless.

The cell companies fought like heck against it until they came up with hands free, then supported it. Hey, it allows them to sell more crud.

The problem isn’t what your hands are doing though, it is what your brain is doing. Many folks have driven past the exit they wanted while legally talking on hands free. Driving is safer when the brain is focused on the task. Period.

I am so sorry to hear it, Mark. I’m glad he survived. It’s absolutely endemic and likely kills more people than we’d ever imagine. I’ll be praying for his quick and easy recovery. I hope the clown that hit him catches some prison time, but I know that probably won’t happen.

You guys ever get a closeup view of the inside of a police car? Makes cell phone use look like absolutely nothing.

It's the very definition of distracted driving.

Daily idiots here everywhere, all the time. Coming up behind them, it's obvious they are on the phone. They are weaving and most of the time they are outside their lane. And then figure out at the last minute (probably because of a GPS warning) that they need to turn NOW and make sudden lane changes and turns.

These people - the penalties should not be just financial. It should be corporal as well.
