These people - the penalties should not be just financial. It should be corporal as well.

Friend of mine lost a niece who was texting while driving.

The text she was trying to send when they recovered her phone at the crash?

"lol"

It's not that important. Put your damned phone down.

Sure glad he seems to be alright; that internal arterial bleed sounds like serious stuff. Now just 6 - 8 weeks of, “It only hurts when I breathe.”

Another cell phone story. Some good friends of mine were sitting at a red light when a young woman texting plowed into the back of them at an estimated 40 mph. She never touched her brakes.

Yeah. Let's just take a big shit on cops for no fucking reason, and step right over Mark's BIL laying up in the hospital, to do so.

It's like interjecting politics in apolitical threads.

Yeah. It's a peeve.

Prayers for a quick and full recovery. I guess I'm too old to understand why people have to text while they're driving. I don't understand what's so important that it can't wait.

My new Charger displays your text message on the dashboard screen when I receive one. I dont fool with that either, since it just trades one distraction with another.

Mark123, prayers for your BILs complete and speedy recovery.

This scares me as my area is in the process of being invaded with 2 million visitors. Actually we're expecting a LOT more than that this year given what we've witnessed the past two months.

Used to joke about the beginning of tourist season being marked by RVs headed the wrong way on a one way street downtown. Now it's not only that but bikers missing curves well before the Sturgis Rally. And car and truck jackwads running stoplights and stop signs as well as drifting across lanes because of their distracted driving.

Glad to hear he is OK. Thank god for EMTs, nurses and doctors.

Years ago my wife was at the tail end of traffic on Route 80. She was looking in the rear view mirror and saw a car coming at not slowing down, She did her best to pull onto the shoulder to avoid being hit. Didnt matter. She got in the rear right part of my Excursion. Hurt my kids a little.

Any she was texting and driving. Thankfully she broke her leg. Harsh yes. But she was lucky.

Dont make my mistake, I was "forgiving" and didnt sue. In this case I say sue. I am not a sue happy person but the bills and other crap will pile up.

Hopefully the driver will put down the phone next time he/she drives.

No, let's have equality for everyone, not just for the selected few.

If you're truly opposed to distracted driving, you'd be opposed to everyone who does it. Either the law applies to everyone or it applies to no one.

Yes, it's one of my peeves.

Stupid is as stupid does. I still see them around here in AZ.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." It needs to be instant arrest and the same as DUI, period.

Problem is: While manipulating ones phone while driving is certainly A Very Bad Idea, hands-free is not without its problems, as well.

Somebody did a study I read a couple years back, showing hands-free phone conversations were nearly as distracting as hands-on. Oddly enough: They found the same was not true, to the same degree, when conversing with another physically in the same vehicle.

I've experienced it, myself.

I do not know what's up with this, but, when I encounter needlessly aggressive drivers on the roads these days (wildly exceeding the speed limit, cutting people off in lane merges, refusing to allow others in in lane merges, etc.), it's far more often women than men.

It didn't used to be this way. I started noticing this change about... five to six years back?

As in a torn aorta? If so, you need to nominate them for what ever medals their department issued for Doing Their Job Right (a "Medal of Valor" perhaps).

A torn aorta is common in high velocity (>25 mph, IIRC) accidents. The reason is the heart has inertia of its own, and when the body stops, the heart tries to keep moving, stretching and tearing the aorta and maybe the inferior and superiors vena cavas and the pulmonary trunk artery, too. tr and In my paramedic course there was a lecture on the physics of injuries and the "movie" we watched showed a motorcyclist t-boning a car at 25 mph, then it proceeded to list the kinds of injuries that were almost always fatal in this kind of motorcycle or automobile accident. If you need help doing this, let me know and I will happily assist you and your BIL.

The lecture was about thee months after I rode my motorcycle into a stopped car on the Beltway. I was doing around 60 mph, and survived with comparatively minor injuries. The entire class knew the story, and in unison everyone turned to look at me. I was told I was as pale as a ghost.

Like you’re doing now, right? This was about someone’s family member getting injured. Thread drift is frowned upon. I admit the profanity is over the top but that’s about it.
