Funny story, they banned LARP’ing at DLI because the Marines found out about it and joined and just kicked the shit out of all the other nerds under the guise of larping !!!!

LARP is "Live Action Role Play."

Think Dungeons and Dragons but instead of playing sitting around a table, everyone dresses up as elves and runs around outside hitting each other with foam swords.

It is becoming a popular term in some parts of the gun community for people to talk about their tactical gear (or especially training with it) when they aren't members of the military or police force.

It seems to mostly be used by people talking about themselves in a non-derogatory (but maybe mildly self-deprecating) way rather than as an attack against someone else.

most of my .mil type of kit, yes....works for hunting / camping it lets you shake down kit to see what works depending on the situation.

alt power, still working on a DC battery / solar plant and need to service the small 2K generator....we do not have many power outages that last beyond an hour or 2...so not really

Body armor....except for HD LARP'ing Cool no

Staples ex: rice, grains etc....yes and no, the bucketized stuff gets checked every now and then and we make our own bread, sausage etc

I have a very simple minimalist plate carrier with two steel plates that adds about 17lbs to my runs and workouts.

Truthfully it cost less than a designated sand filled work out vest and serves two purposes.

You got a closet of 228’s alone Smile

Aah, but that's just a collector building a collection. The chase, the fun. Nothing to do with buying stuff because it was cool. Wink

I have two rules that govern what I keep:

1. Do I need the money that non-used equipment would sell for.
2. Do I need the storage space that the non-used equipment is consuming.

If neither of the above apply, I don't waste time worrying about it.

Truthfully I was thinking of mentioning your collection when writing this post. It came to my mind to use it as an example of a good investment and even though you may not shoot all this guns (an assumption on my part) its not the same as having a bunch of things you don’t use.

"Tac gear?" - no

Tools? - yes, I probably have more hand and power tools than I really need for my minimalist skill set.

I have a few emergency things I've bought just-in-case that I haven't had occasion to use, and hopefully never will.

Not many, but a few things.

I don't have a closet full of TEOTWAWKI gear or tacticool urban warfare gear.

I have a handful of holsters for the handful of pistols I carry,

I have a few boxes of stuff, as in slings, mag pouches etc for the stuff in the safe,
I have a few parts bins, and a few uppers etc, for most of the stuff I collect (firearms wise)

I have a schload of ammo, and magazines,

I do not have anything that may be considered taticool,

I am low speed, high drag,
my first aid kit is a box of bandaids and a tube of neosporin (I should maybe upgrade that)

no plates, carriers, one point slings, and all the other stuff I see the tacticool crowd at the range buying and sporting around,

I do have boots, some camo that I may be able to get in if I ever hunted again,
some backpacks (2 I got off shop lifters when I was in the grocery biz) I use to tote stuff,

keep telling myself I need to do a BOB for the car and house, but have a very limited one now,

flashlights in the house
box full of various pocket knives, yet rarely carry one

I see postings on another forums hometown section about Battle Buddies (?) getting together , dress up in all the kit, and go for a walk or hike,

guessing this is the same?

Yep. LARP originally just referred to folks who dressed up like fantasy characters for roleplaying game get-togethers at the park/woods (like the guys in the movie "Role Models"), but now has been expanded in the gun community to refer to guys who spend a buttload of money on gucci tactical gear just so they can dress up and take photos for Instagram and try to look cool at the range.

Instead of dressing up like knights and elves, they're dressing up like Rangers and Seals. Big Grin

I do a lot of outdoor activities. Hiking, camping, climbing, and such. It's always interesting to see people who look like they just walked out of a sporting good store.

While I do have some new shinny gear most of my stuff is well used and shows it. I like my well-used stuff because I know it works for me. Just ordered new straps for my trekking poles since they finally broke on my last hike.

I love gadgets and gear, but I try to buy stuff that serves a real, practical purpose for everyday life that can also help me if things in society get crazy.

Like has already been mentioned, if you aren't in decent shape, then a lot of that tactical gear people are buying is just going to sit there collecting dust or end up being picked up and used by someone else.
This past year my focus has been on my strength, fitness, and flexibility.

I have a Filson rucksack with change of clothes and toiletries, some first aid, water filtration, Leatherman, flashlight, and energy bars that get rotated and used.
Para recommended the Blue Force Ten-Speed Magazine pouch that holds (6) M4 mags that I purchased, and keep near my rifle. My side arm will be my normal CCW - a P365 with extra mags. So nothing fancy for me, and other than the rifle and water purifier, it is stuff I use in normal life, or when I'm hunting, fishing, and camping.

It feels good to keep things simple.

BDUs? Good lawd, Otto, you were an 'operator'. Smile

Yes, many (most?) people are basically just LARPing and having fun spending their money on things.

It's like a form of culturally acceptable Halloween one can participate in everyday. Role playing. Etc.

Largely harmless. Occasionally annoying to be affected by.

Better than a nation of pacifist Curling fans or something, you know?

How dare you talk bad aboot curling, eh!

(Plus, have you seen the delectable milfs on the female Olympic curling teams? It's practically the winter olympics equivalent of beach volleyball. Big Grin I don't have a damn clue what's going on with the stones and brooms and whatnot, but that doesn't even matter.)

Yup. Or the DND flavor: Paladins and Rangers and Elves and Magicians are now Seals and Rangers and Green Berets, etc, in Militias. There is no more Cowboys and Indians, no more Cops and Robbers, it's Seal Larp. Heck, even Paint Ball culture in countries with harsh gun laws is exceptionally popular (Japan), everyone wants guns and wants to play army sometimes, black, white, green, purple, martian, everyone.

Which is easy to see, really, decades of the Lone Ranger and Tonto, Rat Patrol, dozens of cop shows, 20yrs or so of Call of Duty, Battlefield, to Fortnite and such now, following 20yrs of Doom, Quake, Unreal, Halflife, Halo, and so on. We've been breeding, culturally, two generations of them now, plus movies/tv.

Remember that anti-drug/weed TV commercial in the 80s, dad finds the kid's box of stash in the child's room, and he confronts the kid who replies something like: "i learned it from watching you, dad!!!".

It's like that, only culturally. No one should be surprised. Plus the internet + broadband + streaming video has basically demystified almost everything interesting that had been somewhat elusive for agesz whether tactics, or instructions for complicated processes, the amount of nearly free knowledge available is astonishing.
