There are still a few old-style VA ABC stores around with the store-width counter where the clerks would serve the walk-in public, but most of them have gone over to open displays and serve-yourself. In the old style, you had to know exactly what you wanted, brand, bottle size, and proof and the clerks were forbidden from making suggestions (they did have a printed book with what they carried listed in it). The VA ABC has also started marketing their products, having sales, and special offers (like seasonal or limited-availability liquors), and even monthly lotteries for rarities. Variety is also a lot better than the old days, and rivals many privately-owned liquor stores. |
