I've been in many places where one of the first things I'll do is remove any equipment that I've got on...packs, holsters, rigs of any kind...when dressing out a kill. I can't really fault the guy for that. But...I'd still be close enough to my weapons to deploy it/them quickly if needed.

Bear in Alaska respond to rifle shots as it tends to indicate a moose has been shot.

My buddy used to be a guide in Alaska and he says field-dressing a moose is a 3 man operation - 2 cutting/packing and 1 with gun in hand on the lookout for bear.
