Chirlane McCray, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio’s wife, was entrusted in 2015 with running a new initiative in the city called ThriveNYC, a program that attempted to address issues of homelessness, substance use, depression and suicide, all centered around mental health and with a price tag of $250 million per year in tax payer dollars.

Now, four years later, there are serious concerns and calls for official inquiries into the program because no one can determine if it’s actually been successful. What’s more, due to a general opaqueness when it comes to the program’s budget, ThriveNYC has apparently left that nearly $900 million unaccounted for.

Well, if it is New York State, I can pretty much guarantee that money is gone.

A "general opaqueness." That's a generous way of putting it.

Bring out the forensic accountants. They will track down every penny (assuming the authorities actually care about accounting for all that cash).

"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible."

He’s a Democrat.

Nothing will come of it and the Republicans will turn a blind eye.

What have we learned?

Sounds like ThieveNYC is a more appropriate name for the program.

Off the cuff that's what $620,000 a day for 4 years straight. That puts the mob to shame.

It's probably only a small fraction of the total money lost due to theft and corruption.

There's something ridiculous about the numbers and how much money the government spends. Throwing about a billion aka 1000 million.

You could buy housing for every homeless person in NYC for a billion dollars.

But no, they steal it or otherwise piss it away on public information campaigns and "studies" so they can collect the necessary data.

Don’t worry New York, you have 3 billion dollars coming to the rescue now that Amazon won’t be coming to the city.

And you'd think that after such a revelation the program would be disbanded. Well you'd be wrong. The commies are supposedly expanding the program. No real shocker there actually.

Damn commies.

Sounds like a conflict of interest for the mayor to give one billion NYC tax dollars to his wife for a mental health program, or any reason for that matter.

The lack of required 'transparent' accounting of the funding would go beyond conflict of interest into the realm of potential criminal acts.

Oh wait, it is NYC...

If people would mind their own damn business this country would be better off. I owe no one an explanation or an apology for my personal opinion.

No need to wonder how politicians become multi-millionaires. The outrage will subside, they will end up positive on the cash flow.

The State or jurisdiction can go down the crapper, but the individual politician comes out ahead.

If it were otherwise, who in their right mind would want to be mayor of Chicago??

I can imagine there are a few DeBlasio cronies who have thrived under the program. With $850M to spend, it'd be easy to hide a few million for select comrades.

Which they direct to their cronies, which then gets kicked back to the crooked politicians in the form of campaign 'donations'.
