I wouldn’t give a good fuck. I loathe the place.
Where I’m moving it would mean the local, independent grocer, would get my money and that’s how it should be. Your dollars going into your local community.

Well a portion of it would stay local that's realistic.

I'll tell you what would happen if Walmart shut all its retail outlets on 27 December.

All distribution centers would also shut down.

All inventory would somehow have to be liquidated, starting with all perishable items in the entire distribution chain.

Tens of thousands would become unemployed.

Existing retailers strain to take up the slack due to increased demand

The sudden disruption in supply chain would cause havoc in an already fragile supply chain.

In the end, Amazon would seize as much as possible becoming the largest and dominant retailer in North America. Kroger would likely take the remainder of the grocery business.

Short term, chaos, havoc, and a lot of very upset people. Long term, Amazon wins the war.

And the media would be in heaven
They would cover the story
Morning ,noon and night for six weeks.

The unemployment, the anguished patrons,
The now desolate neighboring retailers and
the realtors trying to fill all those giant buildings.

It would likely alleviate the tight labor market.

I will shed no tears. Hopefully less asshole-ish National chains and resurgent Mom and Pop enterprises fill the void.

Our nearest Walmart is 35 miles away. I was there about six months ago, because we were in the area, and I needed some oil for an oil change, so we stopped in. Before that, I'm pretty sure it was two years since I was in the store.

It would really suck for all the employees, but I could get along just fine without any Walmarts.

You make it sound like a 1950s Japanese horror film. Chicago news always leads with murders. They might send one of their new reporters to stand in front of a closed Walmart that is all. Perhaps where you live it would be stretched into a hour long special.
