Our enemies China, Russia, Iran and a half dozen Central American countries are on the rise and going after us. Time for me to have some food stored away that would carry my family over for 3-4 months. Suggestions for where to get dry food, at a reasonable price with a decent outer container.

You can buy 20 pound bags of pinto beans that will last indefinitely when stored in a cool, dry place. Dried black beans, too. Quite nutritious.

Cooking oil. Salt. Rice. Canned corn. Canned ham.

Peasant food will get you through and you don't have to have some pre-packaged, over-priced "survival food".

yep, rice, beans and pasta. Enough squirrels around here for protein.

Or you can do like Para mentioned, but some 5 gal buckets from lowes and put dried beans, rice, oats, oils, flour, salt, etc in them.

My mom went all in on Y2K and they have just finished using the last bucket of rice this year. (I was visiting this last summer and saw the bucket with my own eyes)

HarvestRight. Best thing we’ve done for food storage. Better and more nutritious than commercially available freeze dried foods. Meals are already prepared so time otherwise spent finding and preparing food can be spent on other critical tasks.

All the food in the world will be of no use to you unless you have sufficient water supplies.

Last week my house had a slab leak (water leak under the house) and my water main was turned off for 6 days before the repair was made and the water main turned back on.

I keep about 50 gallons of water on hand. Conventional advice is that you will need 1 gallon per day. Bull-puckey !!!! I drink a little over a gallon a day. I also had to wash my hands, brush my teeth, and my kitty needs water every day too.

Fortunately I have the keys to an empty family house nearby so I went there daily to shower. I really did not have to rough it, I just used this as a learning and teaching moment for me.

And not to be gross, but you need to consider water needed for toilet use, including santizing your hands and washing them. Fortunately I have an old camping toilet that worked well enough.

Water Water Water, if you don't have water within 3 days you will be DEAD.

Edit to add: As mentioned above see if you have a LSD food pantry/food storage center nearby. That stuff is well packed, better than you can do at home.

All these comments about food, and a very good comment about water for survival, but no one mentions the need for home security.

What happens when the stores are empty and deliveries stop, no fuel, no utilities, no hope of relief? People turn into animals, and some will form predatory groups looking for anyone who has anything they can take and use for themselves. The only thing that will protect you and your family is the ability to keep those supplies for yourselves.

Things could get ugly really fast.

That's a decision you want to consider carefully. Not everyone is comfortable around firearms. They make really loud noises.

But on the food subject. Most have a lot of food in their freezer. So you could cook a lot of it. But how would you preserve it? Like a ham. It could provide a lot of food over a lengthy period of time. But if refrigeration is a problem. Which would be likely if the food chain started to disappear. How would you preserve it for a period of time? I guess you could cook it to the point it becomes jerky?

Removing enough water and adding salt... jerky would be a great option for perishables. Definitely you'd consume things in the order of longevity. I'm sure with a low flame and salt someone like myself could figure out how to salt/dry meat.

Very good question.

The answer is…… Propane refrigerators and propane freezers. The Amish/Mennonites do this well.

Those who live where they have propane for heat or lighting will benefit well from this. Large propane tanks, say 1,000 gallons, and better if they have more than one large propane tank eliminate that worry.

If you live in an apartment or in an urban area this probably may not work for you.

You can buy propane refrigerators & Freezers easily. Consider ones with no electric controls.

I’ve been putting back (currently running out of room in the pantry) canned meats (a shit ton of various flavors of Spam, chicken, corned beef, sardines, tuna and salmon)…along with rice (put every bag into the freezer for a few days before storing it in your containers for emergency use to kill the insect larvae that is in it…I retired from the railroad and know how rice is shipped open in boxcars…it’s probably not how you think)…I’ve added dried beans (especially black eyed peas and black beans…thank you Para )…along with boxes of macaroni and cheese dinners and other pastas and a bunch of Mountain House freeze dried camping meals (their beef stroganoff and breakfast biscuits and gravy are wonderful)…I realize that whatever I’ve stockpiled won’t last me forever, but maybe it will last long enough for me, my family and the Australian Cattle Dog until this bullshit passes…Plus I do grow a pretty good garden (I even like boiled okra) and live within walking distance to a stream (another thing to remember is water purification tablets and life straws as well as a few bottles of Scotch…it helps kill evil things in water as well as taking your mind off the issues at hand )

All the food staples mentioned in large quantities and don’t forget a few vacuum sealed cans of coffee- that will be barter GOLD. A cheap, 2 burner propane cooker, water, or a plan to collect and purify it (bleach). Make sure that everyone in the family is proficient with your firearms. And add a large, quality first-aid kit and a gallon or two of isopropyl alcohol and some iodine based antiseptic, painkillers. Basically imagine the worst case scenario and war game accordingly.

Don’t forget coms and way to power them (batteries and/or solar charger).

You can pressure can meats and they will last for years. I have done it with deer, pork and beef, and bear. You can even pressure can fish.

Just cube the meat in 1 inch squares, add 1 tsp salt, pressure can for the required time. It makes it's own juice so you do not add water.

I like the idea of getting much of longer storage food from the local store or Walmart. That would be the rice, beans & other items that keep longer, canned goods etc..

Not to get to far down the gopher hole with thread drift, but if it comes to having you dipping into your emergency food supplies, chaos would be rampant. There would be a plethora of issues to deal with.

Just to back up some, a few extra supplies is always good to have for power outages, storms & events that could last just a few days.
