I grew up on chorizo, eggs and nopales burritos. We had our own cactus plant in the backyard. Ah, memories...

In South Texas in times of severe drought ranchers burn the thorns off prickly pear with what is essentially a propane flame thrower so cows can eat it.

I have very carefully, with gloves and tongs and a knife, cut all the thorns off a few pads to cut up and cook for my daughters, who were very curious and wanted to try it when it was the wrong time of year for the little thornless baby pads.
