I am wanting to find a scenic spot and cook dinner while the sun sets in the Canyonlands NP or nearby BLM areas. Would anyone know current restrictions for a charcoal fire in a Weber grill type fire. I am judicious on wind and weather with fire. The thought of a nice steak cooking during sunset into early night with some stargazing sounds like fun. Thanks in advance.

I'd check with the ranger station. They would know what the restrictions are and if there are any seasonal/emergency burn bans in effect.

As dry as the west is I would think a charcoal fire is not a good option right now. Not till sometime in Oct.
If things are not already closed down, they should be.

We are starring at a possible and probable horrible fire season this summer. Conditions are right for a historical one even. Not a good situation. How is that for doom and gloom

Usually much fewer rules on BLM land. The On-X hunt app is helpful if you need to know what land your on.

Next is fire safety, with light winds & no tinder around, only sand & rock, should be perfectly safe.

I was at one of the parks 2 years ago, Canyonlands or Arches. While at one of the attractions someone was flying a drone overhead. It was very mildly annoying, no real biggie, but also prohibited. I’m not one to call park officials to complain, some will.

You can camp and BBQ at Dead Horse State Park. The sky is amazing at night. Right down the road from Island in the Sky. As an FYI the bugs can be horrendous at night in Moab.

Thank you for reaching out to Canyonlands National Park with your inquiry! Charcoal fires in a BBQ pit are allowed in the frontcountry campgrounds and picnic areas. However, they are not allowed in the backcountry or on the White Rim Road. Depending on when you visit the park there might be fire restrictions.

I’ll have to dig further for the state and BLM areas when we get there. Looks like possible to do, probably not where I want to do it. I’ve heard that before somewhere.

Another idea is some type of ‘jet boil’ type system. I don’t know exactly how the regulations treat them, but should be more favorable if there are restrictions.

I still remember the instructor saying how a campfire is like a ‘friend’ in a survival situation, so there’s that.

Just an idea to work around open fire restrictions, possibly. Yeah, they do seem a little pricey.
