That is a very difficult argument to counter. Pretty much everything from the rock to the nuclear missile was originally designed with the intent to be used to kill. Either to kill food with a rock, or kill humans with the missile.

Of course my target .22 was designed to make accurately located holes in paper targets. But if I bring that up it is immediately countered with "but the original purpose guns were invented for was to kill".

Anti gun zealots who bring up this argument are not going to change, in my experience. These people seem to deny there is any true need for self defense or even national defense, that our belligerence causes the violence against us. If we are just nice enough to others they will not resort to violence.
