If three are in the mix, get your wife a new model RAV4 Adventure fora daily driver.
My wife fell in love with it. We didn’t get it as we needed more room but it’s fantastic.

We went with the atlas.

Happy all around with it. Good price points.
It’s got a pile of room. Lots more than it looks.
To fit 6’3” me in the back row is cool too.
Ergos in the drivers seat is good as well.
Plenty of seat adjustment for driver.
And it came with a hidden CD player...!

We had a VW Touareg. Terrible reliability.

My wife drives a Lexus GX460 and it’s awesome.

With its low range 4wd and locking diff, it’s quite capable off road. And it never goes in for service.

The GX is a great vehicle but has the same problem as our current Highlander. No space behind the 3rd row.
Also it has the piss poor side swing rear hatch design.

Not a chance I’ll own anything with a CVT.

I prefer the Palisade to the Telluride but not ready to put my stock in the Hyundai/Kia segment.

This, especially with a family. Otherwise it sounds like you're trading two newish, reliable vehicle, for one new reliable vehicle and 2 other vehicles that are only good to drive locally and money pits.

As stated earlier even the Expedition not lifted is still too big or I’d just pull the lift from the current Expedition.

I’d be buying a solid 100 series and would take no issue taking it across country.

Get yourself a 100 Series Land Cruiser. Use this as the low miles vehicle. It gets terrible mileage and the wear and tear on all of your off-road overlanding bits makes it an expensive car to operate. This is the fun car.

Keep your Expedition as the family hauler.

I prefer having 3 vehicles for a two driver family. But, I'm biased towards always having a car in reserve that always has a mostly full tank, is presentably clean inside and outside, and doesn't need to have a bunch of shit taken out of it when I need it for something.

Small car won’t cut it. Wife takes the kids to school 3 or 4 days a week and picks them up 2 so it has to fit three car seats for the next 3 years at least.
Plus all of her crap for work as she travels between 2 locations during most days.

We are already a 3 vehicle crew as we also have a Silverado.

Telluride looks promising but it's first model year so that is a no go for me. The 2020 Ford Exploder looks good, but it's also a first model year. If it were me, I'd try to get a good deal on a '19 Ford Explorer. Another option is the '19 CX-9 since it has more 2nd row legroom and hiproom than your Highlander and more legroom in 3rd row ('19 Explorer beats both though). The CX-9 should be sportier than your Highlander too. Honda beats all 3 in roominess, but Honda isn't known for room to negotiate on price.

Had not thought of the CX9 looked at some pics and looks like there is a good amount of room behind the 3rd row.
Though seems like the 2.5L turbo 4 cylinder would be a touch underpowered for the size of the vehicle.

The newest Pilot looks to have a nice sized cargo area behind the 3rd row as well.
A 2016 Pilot with under 50k miles might actually be the best ticket.

Had not looked at that spec yet.
Though the more I look the more I am stepping off the Atlas thought.
It is certainly the best looking and largest but think the Pilot would do just fine as well.

Third row is a must for us along with more than a foot of cargo space with the third row up.

From my brief research into 7-series BMWs (I currently own a E46 coupe), those with the V12 in it means two of everything. Water pumps, etc.
I do my own work on the E46, and the thought of double components on a V12 just turned me off to them.
Just something to consider.

The 750 idea was a bit more of a pipe dream than reality.

Why does a '17 or newer Sequoia not fit in the picture? They were, are made without the 2nd row captains chairs. Looks to me like 3 kid seats might fit, its larger than the Toyo you now have and still has rear room for traveling stuff. The world is loaded with those nasty black painted ones. You'd be inclined to turn it into some boys toy mud vehicle. The seats are very large for big guys comfort. I think the Sequoia has to be among the nicest SUVs on the market. I'd bet your Mrs. would really like the vehicle. Maybe even without all the childish baja junk attached.

The smaller first generation (2000-06) one, maybe, but the second generation is as big as an Expedition.

Size and cost.
A 2016 with under 50k is running around $42k.
I’d like to be at $30k OTD for the wife’s mobile closer to 25k if possible. With trading in two vehicles should not have to pay sales tax.

Man if you didnt have to sacrifice that Highlander, it would be a great back up vehicle for short trips to stores and such.

That is the plan
If we do it right it will be a wash so the last bit will be paid off the same as we are now.

It’s a 2012 Limited with only 68k miles. It has tons of life left a great vehicle it is just a gigantic pain to fit all the kids and my wife’s work stuff.
Unfortunately we will have 3 in car seats for at least another 3 years presuming they don’t keep extending the car seat requirements.

Racking my brain here. A QX70 is a sweet ride and I saw a 2016 with 22,000 on its Od in your 30 G range. Such a nice SUV but probably too small. The Audi Q7 is a shy larger. Tahoe? Some of those are nice vehicles.

Is the Ford Transit too large? They may look boxy but it sure has doors and seats. I bet would have loads of room, comfortable to travel in and the Flex Fuel option. There are great deals on these.

So the local Ford dealership where I get the Expedition serviced sent me a hand written letter saying they desperately want to buy my Expedition as they have someone specifically asking about it. Now this is probably very much a nonsense letter as I get boilerplate letters from Toyota wanting or Highlander all the time. Then again maybe not as this dealer likes to stack the front of their dealership with lifted trucks.
I know of no other lifted Ecoboost Expeditions in the area and they are aware of what I have done to it.
So just for fun I took a peak at their used options. They have a fully loaded 2017 Limited Explorer with lifetime warranty on the infotainment unit and 40k miles for under 27k.
The Explorer seems to have plenty of room behind the 3rd row especially since it is a sunken cargo compartment.

Can’t hurt to see just how desperately they want my Expedition.

I have located this 100 down the road from my brother.
https://www.cargurus.com/Cars/...nk#listing=243572071

In the CarGurus link says frame damage reported but according to the Carfax it does not have a rebuilt title and was not in an accident but had damage to the passenger front repaired.
So he is hopefully going to get the skinny on it.

No mention of the timing belt being replaced yet either.

If Carfax lists a vehicle has had frame damage. A lot of insurance companies may not insure it or may charge more to insure that vehicle. I wouldn't want to own a vehicle that has frame damage as they are never the same as a vehicle without frame damage.

Carfax does not list the frame damage only the search site does.
Carfax states body damage without an accident and a nonsalvage non flood title guarantee.
Not really seen something listed like that before so will be curious to see what the deal is.

Frame Damage on Toyota’s tank will also bring a lot of other noticeable issues.
