it also means sighting data, or where you set your sights for different yardages,
as in do you have the dope for that M1?

Yeah, "Data On Personal Equipment", or some such nonsense.

jhe888"Dope" is slang for information more generally, although my sense is that use was more popular in the WWII era. Now "dope" meaning information is used in more specific contexts, like shooting.
I don't know, but I'd bet "data on personal equipment" is a false or apocryphal etymology or a sort of reverse acronym. That is, the word dope (for data) already existed and then the phrase was invented to fit the word.

In my childhood, "dope" was a fluid that was applied to model airplanes like paint.

P-220While this phrase still has meaning, the meaning has changed.
One percenter.
When I first became an EMT, I was helping with recruiting. approx. 1% of our local population volunteers as a FF or EMT.
I drafted a letter, making a comparison between one percenters from MC's and our community, ie... we often ride late at night and if we put out the call, many more will have our back. Most people we deal with, end up in the hospital. Our leader (chief) plays in a rock and roll band and we party hard at a place called Stumps (the club where we have our annual picnic). You can hear us coming from a mile away. When people see us coming, they get out of our way and let us by, etc........ (there was lots more). In closing, my ask was that more of our residents join us and become a one percenter.
I am not doing it justice, a lot of people thought it was clever.
Shortly after that, the term one percenter took on a whole new meaning and the comparison was lost forever.

You can't truly call yourself "peaceful" unless you are capable of great violence. If you're not capable of great violence, you're not peaceful, you're harmless.

gjgalliganWhen I was growing up if you said someone/something sucks it wasn't usually meant in a nice way. Doesn't seem like folks "hear" what I hear when that term is used now.

My grandfather used to call a soft drink a “dope”. This came from the “dope wagons” in the textile mills.

slabsides45In talking to some staff the other day I used the words "integrity" and "honorably" when discussing how we intend to always deal with people. You'd have thought I was their grandpaw reading from an old book in front of the fireplace.
Apparently I'm out of the loop. I've learned that the term "that slaps" means that something is great or cool or something equivalent.
Apparently multi syllabic words are also out of vogue, and putting a period or other punctuation at the end of a texted sentence is being aggressive. I'm getting lost in this brave new world....
