I had to install seat belts in my 1958 VW. My new girl friend was VERY impressed. We’ve been married 54 years.

Those under 60 won’t get it.

Uhh, 49, and I get it lol! First vehicle was an '82 F150, manual (4-speed) with the 300 inline 6. Still miss that truck.

I still miss my ‘65 F100 with after my switch over from the original 352 to a 428 Cobra Jet driveline from my friends totaled Mach 1 Mustang (best money I’ve ever spent on a vehicle)…I would happily trade the awkward “foot through the steering wheel” dimmer switch…that was the fastest vehicle I’ve ever owned…as long as you didn’t try to dim your headlights “between shifting gears” (reminds of a ‘Golden Earring’ song from back in the day) Big Grin Big Grin Big Grin

Some of us oldsters here will remember that if faced with two dimmer switches on the floor choose wisely which one to stomp on.

It was pretty common for emergency vehicles like fire trucks and ambulances to have a foot control for the siren. They didn’t cover that subject in driver training classes. Though experience is the best teacher.

Did you offer to buy her a Sprinter van?

Wait… you’re still alive, so asked and answered.

Remember the foot switch for the starter? I think that the last one I had like that was a 1950 Studebaker Champion.

In my '51 Buick Special, the starter switch was under the gas pedal, to start the car, you'd "floor it." Thankfully, the carb was not prone to flooding. The rear shocks were not the detachable cylinders used today, but akin to brake cylinders, and bolted to the frame with a lever arm connected to the swing arm. You could rebuild these much like a brake cylinder.

Trying to remember . . . I think that mine was under the clutch pedal. Push the clutch all the way in, then apply quite a bit more pressure to engage the starter.

There was also a check valve in the brake system, so that when stopped for a traffic light, facing uphill, you applied the brakes and clutch simultaneously. Then you could release the brake pedal and the check valve would maintain pressure in the brake fluid for as long as you kept the clutch depressed. Green light, release the clutch and the brakes would release, so you did not need to do the three-pedal tap dance to start rolling when facing uphill.

I had a Volkswagen Rabbit Diesel that I don't know how many times my wife called to tell me it would not start. It had a seatbelt start feature and she drove it for 4 years everyday!
Got rid of it, and her.
