You're not supposed to notice that stuff. "I vowed to myself to fight against evil more completely and more wholeheartedly than I ever did before. . . . That’s the only way to pay back part of that vast debt, to live up to and try to fulfill that tremendous obligation." Alfred Hornik, Sunday, December 2, 1945 to his family, on his continuing duty to others for surviving WW II.

Long time ago, when JFK was President, I worked with a guy who was sober (mostly) Monday through Thursday. It was a little different on Friday, Saturday, and sometimes Sunday. He was a good guy, and we would sort of keep an eye on him and drive him home when necessary. One of those typical Friday evenings, when a bunch of us with nothing better to do were at a local bar, sipping beer, eating greasy burgers, and playing pool on the table that tilted slightly to the left, it was pretty obvious that we were not going to let Robby drive home. We got him to his house and were having a hard time getting him out of the car. We tugged and pulled, while he was mumbling protests, until finally somebody notice. Yup, seatbelt. In fairness to us, we who did not realize that Robby was held in the car by a seatbelt, I need to point out the younger crowd that seatbelts were not standard equipment in those days. When I bought my 1963 Porsche, I had the dealer install belts before I drove it for the first time. Seatbelts did not become standard equipment on cars in the U.S. until 1968. הרחפת שלי מלאה בצלופחים

My wife has trouble with the high beams- she gets her foot tangled in the steering wheel. Those under 60 won’t get it.

^^^^^^^ Sadly, I get it. And I laughed! Thus the metric system did not really catch on in the States, unless you count the increasing popularity of the nine-millimeter bullet. - Dave Barry "Never go through life saying 'I should have'..." - quote from the 9/11 Boatlift Story (thanks, sdy for posting it)

I get it, too. I was probably 18 before seat belts became standard equipment. Heck, all my siblings and both cousins used to ride in the back of a pickup.

At one time I had an MGB and was a member in an MG club. One of the members had a very nice Midget. One time while he was at work, his pregnant wife decided to go to the store. With much difficulty she managed to get behind the wheel and drove there. Then she found out that she couldn't get out. Too embarrassed to ask for help she drove back home. She parked in the driveway and waited for him to get home and get her out of the car.
