One of the kids I had on a bus route was adopted by a deer. It showed up one day, and just stayed around. They had a German Shepherd and they played together.

The deer came and went, but it was always around. So, it happens.

Happened at our previous house, a doe and her fawn used to hang out in our backyard in the shade for the better part of a summer. My wife put out a big bowl of water for them daily.

That almost seems the case with this one. I think it's been hanging around ever since it was a fawn.

Get your dogs vaccinated for Lyme’s. I have zero nice things to say bout deer right now. After my husband hit one on the way home, we pulled over to wait for the trooper, and after we took back off we were inundated with ticks inside the vehicle.
Don’t know if an ecosystem came off that deer when it hit, or if the side of the freeway where we pulled over was infested.
Either way, 2 of my 4 pups have Lymes just from hanging in the yard, despite the flea and tick preventative..deer are very common here.

Where's here?

Thanks for the suggestion, both dogs are vaccinated for Lyme and wear Seresto collars. I just wish there was a vaccination for humans.

Glad you didn't put it in the back seat. Historically, the subsequent 911 calls don't go well.

We were in WI when we hit it. Deer central. Just down in the ozarks and there were tons there, too. They’re taking over!!

Richard C, not to derail, but I’m curious as to the nature of those calls? This was a decent size buck we took out. Of course he took out our vehicle, too.

OP, I’m glad your pups are vaccinated. To be frank, I’m not a fan of seresto collars or any collar that has chemical in it. I don’t feel that it adequately covers the whole surface of the animal and instead focuses most of the medication around the neck, which can cause burns. I used to use a spray, but they discontinued that so now I’m using a topical that runs from the neck to the tail.

Generally, love baby deer and I think deer are beautiful. Not a hunter. I’m just very sad that despite my best efforts, my pets still have Lymes and I have a totaled SUV. The flea and tick treatment I used last year was one that you just dispersed around the neck and collarbone (and as noted) was ultimately ineffective.

Now as if I need another 4-legged critter around the house yesterday I brought a little raccoon home. I imagine its mother had been shot by a neighbor and this one got away. It was all alone on the neighbor's brother's step.
I rode home, brought a garbage can back, prodded it in, and brought it home.

Set the garbage can on its side and put a bowl of water and one with dog food beside it. This morning the food was gone and the little guy was "hiding" in a wooden pallet that was leaning against the garage.

You guys are killing me! As a vet tech, watch for distemper with this one. OTOH, as a gal, he’s absolutely adorable and you should put water in a shallow bowl with a bottomfull of rocks and small feeder goldfish. Let’s see how those instincts work!
Then call the DNR.

OK thanks. I am always concerned about rabies and distemper with raccoons. So far it seems to be *acting* normal, just timid and likely scared.

I thought I was doing well offering it a little wet and dry dog food, I should give it live gold fish?

We have quite a few raccoons in our area. There's a young one, apparently abandoned by its mother, that has been coming around for several months. My wife puts out dry cat food or dog food for it, along with a pan of clean water. The little raccoon will approach within a foot or two and wait patiently for my wife to put the food and water down.

You totally were doing well, I was just messing around because they love to wash food and it’s excellent enrichment for them- crayfish would be a bit more interesting and maybe more natural. Cat food is probably better at least until you get the DNR involved, or do some more research on what’s appropriate. My dad had a pet raccoon forever ago as a kid. From what I understand it loved to wash its hands.

Maybe take a look online and see if there’s any issues in your county/area with rabies/distemper in raccoons. It’s smart that you’re cautious, and very kind of you to care for the little guy.

You may want to calibrate your screen and see if your gamma setting needs adjusting. Stuff hidden in shadows can be due to monitor behavior.

Nothing wrong with that deer. Possibly is pregnant as now is the time they give birth. Probably also just likes the shade away from the heat. Not sure what the area around your house is like but there are deer everywhere in the wooded suburbs of Atlanta.

I don't believe she's pregnant, most deer had their fawns over a month ago and they're now roaming around with their mothers.

I think you're right that she seems to like the shade there because she generally uses it midday. As I just rode the mower past the carport on the way to putting it away she came out and trotted off to the weeds to nibble. My guess is she's back in her carport relaxing now.
