I suspect a number of things will change in his household; better doors/locks, more firearms puchases (like a shotgun, larger caliber handgun), and hopefully some firearms training for his spouse.

I have seen more bears this year than previous years at my lot in Loudoun County. Here is a sow that I see from time to time.

And that it’s not the right to arm bears.

Double aught buck is going to get you nine-ish pellets, each one weighing about 50 grains. A .22lr is about 40 grains and a 9mm is 115ish grains.

That's not what you want.

You want 1 oz slugs. You need the mass all behind a single projectile to penetrate and hit vitals on a bear.

There's a particular bear around here that has been causing problems. It chewed up my outdoor trash can and scattered trash everywhere, presumably because I put a dead mouse stuck to a sticky trap into the trash. I never found the sticky trap.

I could be blamed for that, but the bear recently chewed up a 1 gallon can of gas/oil for 2-stroke engines and dumped gas by my water well. That suggests that the bear has learned that there is food inside of plastic cans regardless of smell.

I heard the bear out there by my truck that night and could have killed it, but getting rid of its carcass would have been a problem.

I was out North of Gunnison about 4 years ago, elk hunting. At the time they were trying to reduce the bear numbers, offering over the counter tags I thought. I had no interest in a bear tag.

I did see a small bear while elk hunting. A guy down the ridge shot a black bear while we were there. That’s the best way, offer more tags.

We live in the sticks & occasionally see bears on our daily walks, and they're always going the other way. If I was worried about bears I'd carry a 12 Ga with slugs.

I carry a G17 with an extra mag on our walks, but not really for bear protection. I doubt there'd be enough penetration for a quick kill, but emptying the first mag into the bear may make it want to go do something else. Or.... it may just piss it off. In which case, I hope I have time to reload the second mag.

Well now, let's think about this. A bear is in your house and the wife and kids are asleep. It would seem to me the caliber of weapon you grab might be pretty important. A wounded bear is the last thing you want. Shoot, I'm thinking of a 12 gauge with double odd buck.

Its getting to the point you will have 3 night stand guns.

The 10mm is only slightly longer than the 40S&W, so if you take a half step closer before you shoot the bear, it works out the same. Wink

I was recently vacationing in Colorado. I hiked the trail up Mt Massive near Leadville. Up near tree line I had the treat of seeing a black bear in full gallop hardly 50’ from the trail. It was running downhill and covered good distance in seconds. In talking to other folks it’s a rarity to see one.

I took a bear back in 2007. I shot it 3 times, and my hunting buddy shot it twice. Both of us with 300WM, from a bit off. He finally laid down, but after 15 minutes or so, he was still breathing as we walked up. I shot him at the base of the neck are with a 44mag, hard cast lead, buffalo bore. I swear he cursed at me and lived another minute.

We counted the holes, every one of those rifle rounds were in the lungs and heart area. I pulled the 44 bullet from the spine, still have it in a drawer somewhere. Bears are tough. His hide sleeps on my freezer at the office.
