Hearing reports that the test fire went badly and the rocket blew up on the pad.

A huge setback for our overall space program.

I can't imagine what goes through the teams minds when this happens. "Did I do that?" comes to mind, an 80s nonsensical TV show line, but it has to weigh heavily on everyone.

I am amazed that the space industry can sustain all these losses.

If we were to calculate the probability of another failure, using the Poisson distribution, for low frequency defects, we would likely be horrified. If I were an astronaut, I would likely resign my commission, with this kind of track record.

Hopefully they didn't get their rocket parts from Amazon.

But seriously, so many things fail due to the failure of a $10 part, or a combination of that with poor assembly procedures, and / or poor engineering.

Just my experience.

Yes Rico. Kaboom. Big Grin

I woke up early and looked at Facebook before my brain was engaged. The video shot from some bay-side condo was the first thing I saw. Of course I hadn't read the caption so my first thought was "Who set off a nuke where? And how did the camera not fry??" Big Grin

Yeah, not quite Earth shattering but still definitely qualifies as a Kaboom.

What’s worse than the failure of a $10 part is a bunch of sissy’s that don’t have the stones to call off a launch for fear of making some jackass mad.

Think 1/28/86.

No way I’d put my ass on the line. Talk tough on safety all you want, at the end of the day people want to keep their job. I’ll pass.

An Aero Engineer friend of mine pointed out that the amount of rocket fuel and liquid oxygen in the shuttle was the equivalent energy to a small nuclear explosion.

To keep Artemis moon work on schedule I would love to see Elon offer to use Starship to send Blue origin MK1 moon lander to the moon next year. Hell Starship could send three or four of them to the moon in one shot. Some significant technical details would need to be worked out but certainly SpaceX possible.
