The wife snagged these on her way out the door this AM, it's the "JellyFish" effect of a launched rocket going into space....

So what is the "JellyFish"? It's a glowing, parachute- or jellyfish-shaped cloud in the sky that forms when a rocket launches shortly before sunrise or just after sunset.

Just one of the cool things living not far from the Cape....

That is pretty cool. Are you close enough that you can you hear the rocket, or maybe even feel its raw power?

I think that plume that forms is from hot staging the second set of engines

The exhaust plume expands from liftoff, but the expansion becomes much greater the higher it goes as it is less restrained by atmospheric pressure.

It's not a result of the staging. Even the Saturn rockets did it. And where I learned of it.

With greater number of launches where the sky is dark, and the plume is illuminated at altitude, and many cameras, it has become witnessed more often.

Thanks for sharing, that is beyond cool. If I had no idea and just walked out in the morning and saw that, I would be wondering what the hell.

The only thing I have ever seen was back sometime between 1997 and 2000 when the space shuttle was making re-entry into the atmosphere and the path was over my house. It was very cool to watch and I failed to take any pictures or video. It was nothing like these pictures though.

That's amazing! I've never seen that before, thanks for sharing. It's always been kind of a bucket list thing for me to go see a launch. We were down at Canaveral for a few days last year but nothing went up while we were there. Seeing any launch would make my day, but what you have there is really something special.
