Right after getting new shed put in and deck refinished. Sigh.

Our almost 14 YO dryer spins but no heat. Washer sometimes does not drain well. In fairness, we've used them non-stop with 2 kids, now in college.

So, makes sense to replace both at same time. I'm thinking same brand. But that's all I got.

Please step up and let me know the best brands to look into, and those to avoid. Great cool "must have" features and those not to bother with etc. Budget is pretty flexible. I'd say we will be in this house another decade so we purchase semi-high-end.

Thanks all.

Speed queen’s classic line and they’re made in US. A lot of companies like Samsung make their washers and dryers in China.

I don't have any advice on brands but, after shopping at Lowes and Home Depot and getting nothing but a headache. Nothing in stock, no knowledge of products, terrible experience.

We decided to try Best Buy and I was expecting the same no service... Great service, the guy knew his product and we were out of there in 10 minutes, washer and dryer delivered the next day. It helped that the wife knew what she wanted after shopping at the other two places.

She loves her Samsung products

Speed queen is great for rugged reliability.

Samsung if you want all the features and bells and whistles (but they are notoriously unrelaible).

We went with a pair of mid tier Maytags four years ago and they work just fine.

We tend to stay in the Whirlpool family for most appliance purchases.

Semi-high end would not match my decidedly basic clothes. I favor extra-capacity and old-fashioned dial timer style equipment.

Big appliance store in-stock purchase. Fifteen years ago I got a pair of GE appliances and they're still aces. The SpeedQueen line looks great for my next purchases.

While you'll get advice on using the Search function, I favor up-to-the-minute feedback and hereby approve of this thread. Wink In addition, tacking onto an old longer thread does not guarantee the Silent Majority will respond.

Speed Queen. Like a well-made, simple and effective revolver.

Hmm...maybe I need to restock my inventory with a revolver.

I'm also in the market for new washer/dryer (and fridge) for the new house.

I know Speed Queen is frequently recommended around here, but I have my concerns. There seems to have been a steep decline in reviews since 2018. Apparently there were some major changes made a couple years ago, and not for the better. Even the big review websites (Consumer Reports, et al) are more negative towards Speed Queen now. Apparently, not only is customer satisfaction down, but repairs are up too.

I had gone into this having almost decided on Speed Queen, but now I'm not so sure. I've started looking into the Maytag/Whirlpool family now.

Those that are touting Speed Queen appliances, are yours pre-2018 or post-2018?

They started offering the classic line again. Get one with an active agitator, and you’ll basically be buying the pre-18 model.

When I moved to TX in Jan 2018, I called around and found an old appliance store that specialized in Speed Queen inventory, the largest in the area. I bought a washer/dryer set from 2017 from their rapidly disappearing inventory before the new 2018s arrived. I paid for the set and they actually warehoused them for a couple of months before we bought our house. My wife says SQ is the best she ever used.

I believe SQ went back to their older design recently, at least on one washer model.

This. The bad reviews are because for 2018 they stopped making the classic line with the old-style agitator. They were brought back in 2019 due to customer demand.

We just had to get a new washer ourselves as our 3.5 year old Maytag crapped out on me. It was a top load and was not cheap by any means and I was going to have it fixed but checking how much it was going to cost to get a house call and labor, I was half way into a new machine. I tried to take it apart but I had no idea what I was looking for and could not look it up on youtube for advice. Seems quality has decreased on many things and most seem to be disposable.

With that said, we went with a GE brand top load as we don't have room for the front loaders and pedestals. I also bought the extended warranty this time as it wasn't very much. My Whirlpool dryer is still going strong and is about 7 years old now. Our original Whirlpool washer/dryer combo "Gold" edition-(came with the house we built) and both lasted over 14 years. Prices are crazy on some things though.

Anyone have thoughts on the Maytag Commercial Residential line?

Seems to be roughly equivalent to Speed Queen, and is what most places were recommending after SQ's 2018 fiasco.

We replaced the set we bought from Sears after 20 years, the tub broke and it just wasn't repairable.

Lowes did a decent job, no where near as informed as the old Sears guy when we bought the first set of Kenmores. Great units, dryer still worked.

Bought a set of front loading Maytags, I wanted the top loaders but the wifes height made it a challenge because the new washers are much deeper, she couldn't reach the bottom without a stool, and I didn't want to become the full time washing machine guy.

So far they have performed well, let you know in 17 years if they hold up Big Grin

Thanks for input. Keep it coming. Good or bad, my wife has asked me to shop online. I'll be doing my research...

A Bray and Scarff opened a few miles from my house this past Monday and they have several Speed Queens on display. I'll be heading over shortly.

Replace the drain pump in the washer - or clear out the blockage that's preventing draining.

Repair the heating system in the dryer.

If gas, it's usually the coils, if electric you'll need a meter.

Cost effective and buys you potentially years of extended service.

That's what I have. It's the best washer I've had since the invention of HE washers.

It fills all the way up, you can open it and toss something in without stopping the cycle. It sounds like an old school washer. It gets things clean. No soap dispensers to build up mold. Better than average warranty. Cycles are 20-30 minutes shorter than my HE but still gets things cleaner than the HE unit did.

Now the downside, small size. Can't wash anything bigger than queen sized blanket, and agitator will sometimes get stuck on thick comforters, requiring starting cycle all over.

Great clothes washer, but I bring my big comforter to the laundromat, blankets are no problem though.

Speed Queen is good, like the revolver mention, but also seriously lacking capacity (like a revolver) compared to modern washers.

Whirlpool or maytag front loaders or top loaders would be my choice, Much better capacity than the SQ and they last. I had a duet front loader go 10 years before the door latch broke (which I could've fixed) that washer did on average 20 loads of laundry a month for 10 years.

There are some brands known for advanced features and/or good value that don't have widespread service/parts support. Whichever model/brand you get, check first who, if anyone, services your home location for that brand.

If you can't get good home service - out-of-warranty as well as in-warranty - for a particular major-appliance brand, IMO that would disqualify that brand from consideration.
