Freezing rain is going to be a big problem for western Kentucky, eventually western Tenn, and into northern Tx down to Dallas, up through Arkansas starting overnight Wed night and lasting through much of Thursday--Major Ice Storm. As the wave pulls through mid Tenn on Thursday, it stalls the crawl of the cold air in western TN, Ky and northwest Mississippi region. That keeps freezing rain and sleet going a long time (not snow). Friday morning temps near ZERO in western Kentucky. Bad news for part of Tennessee, Arkansas and Kentucky that ends up losing power later Thursday from all the ice on the trees. Prepare now for power outages.
And more data runs show the next wave of low pressure coming toward the Cold Air Damming regions east of the Appalachians on Sunday now. But how long will the surface high pressure hold the temps below freezing in VA, and Carolinas on Sunday? Too early to know yet and there's plenty of time to monitor that.

During one of the ice storms we got up and the sound of hundreds of tree limbs breaking is impressive. There were entire trees coming down in pieces.

The second one hit hard 20 miles south where I hunt and the following year there was no way you could work thru all the limbs and crowns broken down on the forest floor. We all walked the trails and set up near open meadows. The deer didnt see it that way tho, and with the canopy opened up they got more browse and the population increased.

That 19" I was commuting to work in was educational, we had three days warning and that morning I worked my way up to the highway in my Cherokee, there were little econoboxes stuck in six foot snowplow drifts everywhere. The average citizen seems to have no regard for checking the weather. By noon as I was driving to work in near white out conditions I kept seeing trucks in the ditches and a lot were 4WD, too.

Main roads were plowed the next day, and the day after we had a few guys coming in who needed new drag links for those 4WD trucks - their buddies would hook a snatch strap on them and then take off . . .

We don't get enough deep snow to learn them.

It's raining now.

"Winter Is Coming!"

A local HVAC is using that in a commercial with the owner dressed in the role, knocking on doors and stating the line.

I wonder how much feedback he gets for it.

In the day we had a local weatherman - nice "old" guy to a 12 year old me - and he read off the forecast which all the services were providing, plus his insights - yes, we would get snow flurries that night.

21" of snow flurries later, I got up and looked out into the street, got on what snow gear I could manage (plastic bags over my sox) and waded out to find somebody had left the drivers window on my Dad's 66 Mustang convertible down. Snow filled the front of the interior. I got the door opened finally, looked out the window, and there were BULLET HOLES IN THE WINDSHIELD!

Well, closer examination showed somebody had beat the glass out with a ball peen hammer. Later in the week as things thawed we noticed a lot of cars on our street had that - somebody really went out of their way to get a dozen or so.

A day later the paper had the story, just two inches below the fold, some character had started a mile away, worked up that street, jogged over to ours, then jogged again covering 20 blocks. Hundreds of cars, over $500,000 in damage that night. I calculated the modern value a few years back - $3 million.

Dad was very busy the next few years getting a parking drive and paving a spot inside our fence.

Why? Winter doesn't start until late December, and runs through late March.

January and February are mid-winter. There's supposed to be snow in the middle of winter.

Well, we’re supposed to get 10 to 15” starting possibly tonight, thru 7 pm Thursday. Actually got a call from our trash services saying they will not be working the route rest of this week, and will start over next week. That’s a first. It’s raining now, supposed to turn to snow after midnight.

Yeah, trash pickup is today. We've got a inch of sleet over an 1/8" of ice right now. They might make it.

8" of snow tonight.

And the wood stove is choking up again, dang it. Had to let it die and its 20F outside. It's usually the upper draft shelf filled with ash and it needs shaking out. I might need to go out and find a creosote log, too.

Dang it. Sure hope the new locker and mud tires can handle it. Smile

They've been proclaiming a Snowmageddon up here in S.E. Michigan. 12-14 in. farther south, 10-12 in. in my area, 6-8 in. a bit farther north.

The initial band of ice that was supposed to start around sunrise stayed north/east of us, so we dodged the initial ice accumulation. But no way we're going to dodge the next band, which is coming in starting around noon.

Luckily, it means our forecast has now dropped from 0.5" of ice accumulation to "only" 0.25", plus the snow piled on top starting this evening through tomorrow.

Don't forget the eggs and pancake syrup for survival toast.

Heading out in to the howling winds.

The howling winds took off all my windshield covers and then dumped a 1/4" of ice and inch of sleet on them. They are glued down tight in perfectly worthless positions.

Snow Tip: when you pull the big mitts out of the lower pockets pull out the pocket flaps too. Otherwise they just fill up with all the snow you just armdozed off the windshields. Duh. I have to learn this every snow.

It's 20F and still slowly dropping.

LOL I may be retiring to Harrison, AR. We drove down there in that last snow storm (thru Branson). WTH?!?! I am looking to get AWAY from that stuff!

Snowed all night and all day today. I figured at 3pm that I’d better get at clearing snow. They were calling for 8” to 12”, we got 14” to 16”. More snow and higher winds tonight, it’s going to get ugly! I’m glad I’d moved the tractor with the snow blade into my garage from the shed! Oh, I found the ice under the snow.

I’m ready for spring!

The ice line slipped further south than expected, which means we will get more snow. With the wind it's not just piling up. I had pushed off a lot of sleet from the porch and I can still see the scrape marks - until I get near the wood rack and yup, it's drifting 12 to 18". Refilling the rack inside might take more than a few minutes now.

Did some shopping yesterday in the truck, and it grabbed the sleet pretty well, no issues with just one tire spinning - if I pushed it both would and the side step wasn't particularly wild, either. The only issue I had was backing out of the drive and trying to turn while going uphill. I had to get a bit of a run at it.

I've had 4WD for quite a while but when I got this truck it was only 2 wheel - and with an open diff that really made it just 1 wheel drive. It's nice to have both working, it makes a significant difference. It doesn't pull the front end into a turn but it's still much better.

Well, we ended up with at least 10-12 inches of snow. I didn’t bother to re measure once I determined it was at 10. Not really snowing today, yet. But they had a chance to clean up the roads overnight. So, no major issues.
