Another ice event for AR and OK? Dallas icing up, 2,000 flights cancelled Login/Join

We've got weather alerts out now for KS MO AR OK and expecting up to 8" - or more - for SW MO.

One interesting terrain feature here is the I44 corridor and we repeatedly get a change in the results North vs South of that Interstate. This event is mostly rain changing to snow North of I44, and Mix with freezing rain south - up to a half inch of ice.

Having experienced two half inch ice storms in the past - the line slipped a few miles north of the highway - it's a major weather event. Aside from the destruction of thousands of trees is the impossibility of getting to supplies when there is 1) no power 2) no traction whatsoever. The worst one required folks in my town to travel 6 miles to the other side of the grid to find working fuel pumps and stores consistently open. I was working for an auto parts store and they sold out an entire semi load of generators that week, as were all the boxmarts, lumberyards, hardware store, etc.

Did I mention gas cans for those gensets? Yep, gone in a day. A 5-6kw will drink up 10 gallons a day full time and we were back to driving across town to find a working pump.

Of course, many folks around here over 30 have a clue about it now and it's still a forecast, not a guarantee.

Anywho, it will be interesting to see how many stock up on survival french toast in the next 24 hours. Milk eggs bread seem to be the fashion every time.

Yep. It's still up in the air, varying based on the exact timing of temperature drops and precipitation, but down here they're calling for up to a half inch of ice on Wednesday afternoon into evening, topped by 6-12 inches of snow Wednesday night through Thursday night.

Should be fun. Roll Eyes

We've been overdue for an ice storm anyway. Last big one was 2009, and 2000 before that.

It's 68F right now. Big Grin

"Overdue for an ice storm" isn't something I care to live with - but it happens here, too. I've been comparing four different weather forecasts and it's ranging from 5-7" total on Weatherbug to 15" on weather.com. Wunderground has it at 14" all in. They were out front early on. As said, it could do less or worse and you wait and see.

We live in tornado alley, and within less than a hour a thunderhead can pop up and plant an EF5 across a metro. And it did just a few miles south of here in 2011. We had 19" of snow to start, an earthquake, the EF5, and 30 days over 100F that year.

2021 was a joke in comparison. Perspective.

So far, I've returned a grill propane tank for a refill, bought another 5 gal no alcohol fuel for the generator (good for the mowers etc too,) started the genset to see if it would (three pulls) and I'm getting ready to wheel it out to the corner of the house where I can run cords thru a window easy while haveing it properly distanced. And bought a pool noodle for the window jamb to seal it. Still have 2 1/2 ricks of walnut all racked up for the 7F temps by Friday.

Ahh, the Ozarks. Don't like the weather? Wait three days and you will be begging for it to change again.

My daughter is driving from Utah to Ft. Sill, OK, leaving Utah on Thursday. Any idea if she'll run into this ice storm?

Ladies and gentlemen, take my advice - pull down your pants and slide on the ice.

If she isn’t leaving UT until Thursday it looks like she will be coming in behind the storm. She may have to deal with the aftermath, but not the actual storm.

Guess I'll be picking up some coworkers if it's bad. Modot in Anderson is pretty good about the highways, but I've a mile of dirt road before I even hit pavement.

Could be fun, ice and the hills in Branson is not a good combination. You’ll see me inside with a hot cup of coffee looking out my window wondering should I shovel my driveway or not. Being retired has its advantages.

We’re looking at 6-8” of snow here in Wichita. SE Kansas and SW Missouri looking like they’ll get more of the ice event. In the 5 years we were in Springfield, MO we were luckily that we only ever saw snow. Ice in the part of the world would have been something completely different.

I'm in between those 2 places and the forecast is for snow on Thursday. High of 10 degrees and low of 0 degrees.

And 150 miles north of Wichita, we're only supposed to get between 3 to 6 inches.

Hopefully closer to 3".

We're seeing the thicker ice staying below the I44 corridor, which could put it from Grove OK thru Branson. . .

So far.

The weatherman tonight said we should see over 10 inches of snow here at the Lake. South of I44 it looks like mostly freezing rain and/or sleet. That sucks.

We are not alone, this system will sweep up toward the Great Lakes before heading out into the Atlantic.

I was out of power for 9days back in an ice event probably 2009, It was 30 degrees and raining for like 3 days, you could hear the trees breaking down. We heat with wood and still had water so it was all right. I need to go fire up the fvr generator and make sure its running today!

Right now it looks mostly south of WI, no major accumulations here. Yes, ice can be worse, branches in power lines, messy.

As a pilot, weather checking is a big part getting ready for a flight. I think people could benefit by doing a weather peek before some outings & longer drives. Much of the time, even 12 hours earlier or a day later make all the difference.

A few years ago I drove to FL mid-Winter, just after a big storm in central-south IL. I had fine conditions, but plenty of vehicles & semi-trucks were still in the ditch. I think the tow companies were making bookoo bucks.
