I think it may depend on the dog.

I have seen lots of smart Labs, but my aunt and uncle had a Black Lab that was as dumb as dirt.

I have to agree with this based on my personal experience with sample size of 2 (that were related).

My parents had a Pekingese when I was a kid. That was about the dumbest dog we ever had. If he got out and went down more than two or three houses he had no idea how to get back home. I had to go out and find him wandering the neighborhood completely lost numerous time.

I'll agree with the Afghan hound assessment. Those are dumb dogs. There was one in my neighborhood growing up, and it was totally stupid, and mean.

I've had a couple of friends with Boxers, and neither of them was particularly smart. They could both fart with a vengeance, though, and they were tough as hell. Somebody else already said they saw one going after the tires on a moving car...my buddy's boxer did that and got partially run over...jumped up and went back for more. If you're gonna be dumb you've gotta be tough!

I don't think much of Chihuahuas, but I have a buddy who has one that can identify an S&W Model 13. He uses that particular gun loaded with rubber bullets to shoot mice around the house, and his dog hates the noise. She'll freak out and hide whenever he pulls it out, but completely ignores any of his other guns, even other revolvers.

We've always had shepherds, and they've all been incredibly intelligent...sometimes too intelligent for their own good. Escape artists and sneaky buggers. My current shepherd mix killed a chicken and hid it under some leaves in the back yard. When I found it, I didn't say anything to her, or even look at her, but she was already slinking away, lol.

Hahaha! When I got my black Lab I had a good chat with the vet. As the conversation turned to "smarts," I said something about the common belief that Labs are smart. She paused or a moment and said, "Oh, no... they're dumb." I think I stalled for a second, not knowing what to say, and she continued: "Labs are godawful stupid!"

I asked for clarification, and got it. She told me Labs are very trainable -- you can get them to do the things you want them to do when you request it, but when it comes to thinking on their own they're just out of luck.

Fifteen years with Miss Boogerhead (better known as Molly), and I totally believe the vet. Someone asked me what kind of dog I had... I answered with "Purebred American dorkhound." The response? "Black Lab, eh?" Big Grin

God bless America.

Fritz, our previous Boxer was very smart. His "mother" was a Field and Trials Champion. Fritz was an Obedience Blue Ribbon winning dog in an "Amateur" class, with our son as his handler.

Our present Bichon Frise is dumber than a box of rocks.

Miniature Dachshund. Sweet dog but dumb as dirt. Also she was the most amazing hunter I have ever seen in a dog. She could kill birds and small animals like a cat. Dumb enough to take on ground hogs triple her size too. Dumb. Let’s take a trip to the vet to sew you back up dumb. Twice.

We had a GSP that wasn’t too bright. Seems like bird dogs in general may be lacking; I’ve been around Brittneys that didn’t strike me as very smart.

I gotta' go with Cocker Spaniel. I'm sure there may be exceptions, but I've never been around one that struck me as having any more than 3 functioning brain cells.

My own personal non-scientific based theory is that it comes down to breeding. The further away a breed gets from the wolf, coyote, jackal, dingo, etc. the dumber it is and more health issues are expected.

My vote goes to Bassett Hounds. They are like democrats, loud mostly stupid. I do have to admit though, Bassett Puppies are incredibly cute.

We’ve had a black Lab and now have a chocolate and a yellow. My wife described the black and now the yellow as “pretty, not smart”. Which is true. Lovable, but dumber than a box of rocks.

Now our chocolate apparently got all the recessive genes. She is wickedly smart for a Lab. She learns tricks in three repetitions or less, she’s learned how to open child gates, we had to put a lock on the gate on their crate, as she figured out how to open that as well. She knows when my wife is packing for a trip. She remembers the breeder, her kids and their house. She has figured out how to trick our other Lab into going outside so she can take his spot on the sofa. She thinks she is a pointer, goes into the classic pointer pose when she spots something. She also is small for a Lab, about 60 pounds, and her coat is lighter and looks different than our other two. She is AKC papered, just very different from other Labs.

Beagles. They have fabulous hunting instincts but as soon as they get on a scent, all other brain activity takes a back seat. My sweet little Sola likes to lay under covers. She will repeatedly paw at your leg on a bare couch to go to ground when no cover is in evidence.

Yes, but only 1 was dumb.
Were both dogs female?

Perhaps, you didn’t read the question. The question was WHAT IS THE DUMBEST DOG BREED?

Perhaps, you didn’t read any of the other responses in this thread, sir.

I personally think all dogs are dumb until they reach about 2 years of age. Then intelligence or lack there of falls on the owner.
About the time where the dog figures out what the owner wants/needs, and vice versa the bond really starts to grow.

We have had several Labs over the past 40 years. I would not call any of them dumb. The current resident is a Fox Red Irish Lab from Wildrose Kennels. A fantastic flusher/retriever , momma dog, and companion. A thinker, she is smarter than a lot of people I have met. Genetics are important.
