There’s a guy at work who brings in his Bulldog and that is the dumbest dog I have ever encountered. I don’t remember which type of bulldog I just remember how shockingly dim he was.

We've had a total of three Maltese over the years. The only one we thought was stupid was a female. We found out she was completely deaf so we gave her a pass. The others weren't exactly Rhodes Scholars, but they got along. Quick and easy to potty train, learned basic commands and were great in-the-house dogs.

Guys, y’all’s boxers aren’t a minority so they can’t be getting offended so easily. Big Grin

I prefaced, “in my experience” and that boxer was quite ignorant.

My wife, who has been training dogs now "for a bit" will say Dalmatians are the dumbest...

As to Boxers, I have had 5 - they were all trainable and intelligent.

A friend of mine has a Bassett Hound. That dog will not be getting an invitation to join Mensa anytime soon.

There's times I want to say Husky, as their curiosity gets them into trouble more times than I can remember. Then I remember the times they've managed to 'escape', either opening doors or, figuring out fences, enclosures and barriers. While they're not herding dog-smart, and will never be a guard dog, they're cleaver and ....needy.

When i was young my dad raised beagles for hunting.
I don't think he ever had a female beagle with an IQ in positive digits.

I really like both breeds, and have had a couple of each in my life, but my God, I could throw a stick out the window and hit five dogs smarter than them.

I have to chime in on chihuahuas. Living in the same house, my brother in law had a chihuahua and I have two mini poodles. Whenever I gave the dogs treats, I would make the mini poodles do their tricks - sit, stay, down, twirl, etc. When it came to the chihuahua, I would command it to do the only thing it knew - do nothing.

But one day while I was desperately looking for a new job, I came home and broke down on the couch with my wife and I was crying. I couldn’t help myself. My two mini poodles just stared at me from the floor. It was the chihuahua that ran up the couch and along the armrest to the back of the couch and started pawing my shoulder in sympathy.

I became fond of that chihuahua ever since.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." My great uncle had a Chihuahua that terrorized everyone with whom he came in contact. Some one mentioned the dog at a family reunion a few years ago and everyone had a story. A terror, Uncle Bob always talked about how smart but stubborn the dog was. We had a Chihuahua-Pekingese mix that was also very intelligent.

Shih Tzus, on the other hand, are loyal and playful but they love being catered to (“Best in Show,” anyone?) and seem to be dumber than a box of rocks. Training for anything, even going outside to do their business, is difficult and they are likely to forget the lesson learned 2.5 seconds after finally learning it. Then again, maybe they’re like Uncle Bob’s Chihuahua and are just flat out stubborn and don’t care.

My current Beagle is the smartest dog I have ever been around. My two previous Beagles were not so smart. What makes a dog smart? Some dogs think tricks are stupid so I do not use that as criteria. My current Beagle understands simple phases & is able to understand a new phase made up of previous words learned. Also when I got him at 11 weeks he pooped once & I showed him the pet door. He urinated twice & I showed him the pet door. Never again in 7 years has he gone inside. Even when he has thrown up he goes ourside. To me that is smart!

We had a purebred Beagle puppy; it was the dumbest and worst-behaved dog we've ever had.

It would literally spin around while taking a crap and eat its own feces while in the middle of going.

I've trained many dogs and they have all turned out wonderfully but this dog was untrainable. We even engaged a professional after my six months of training had no effect. The professional dog trainer said "Sometimes you just get a dumb dog" as he couldn't make any progress with her either.

I don't know if all Beagels are dumb but I'll never have another.

We've had three Basset Hounds, all smart as a whip, typically stubborn like most hounds, easily house trained, and sly as can be,

Daughters Boxer was semi smart, and goofy as any dog I've ever seen, JMO the level of perceived smartness in a dog is directly proportional to the trainers time and ability to adjust to how the dog responds.

There area just as many "stupid" owners when it comes to training dogs that result in dogs not behaving, responding or following training.

For my money, Irish Setters are the mud dumbest dogs ever. They are beautiful, and incredibly loyal but my God are they stupid...
