Soliciting info on Newport News VA area Login/Join

Hello everybody. There is a chance my fiance and I may be moving to the Newport News Virginia area soon. She's flying out for a second in person interview soon for a pretty nice job. I'm actually from Northern VA (born in Falls Church, lived in DC metro) but that was a very long time ago.

Not so concerned about firearms related stuff as that's easy to look up. On that topic it looks not terrible (no capacity or type bans), though not as robust and well protected as where I am now (Missouri).

Just sort of looking for any inside info on the area. It's sort of short notice so pretty high odds we'd rent for the first 6-12 months as we got a feel for the area and places we liked and didn't like.

I'm not worried about job prospects. Only reason we'd move is if the place she is interviewing offers her a job and it would be pretty nice. I'm fine as all my job requires is being within an hour or two of an airport and high speed internet access.

Really just looking for general quality of life Info, areas to avoid, etc.

Huge naval presence and gigantic shipyard. Parts are pretty industrial. Spent time there years ago as my grad school roommate was from Newport News. Good seafood. They have hurricanes but not that often. Close to Virginia Beach which is a resort area. Not too far from the Outer Banks and Kitty Hawk.

My daughter and husband lived there post college. They escaped as quickly as possible. I can tell you for sure where not to live in NN.

The traffic can be stupid.

The military presence leads to transient time frame neighborhoods. Roots are not established in those.

I’m over in Chesterfield, but I spend a lot of time in the Newport News area for work. Like everywhere there’s good parts and bad. If I were y’all I’d look at the James City County/ Williamsburg area. There’s also the York/Poquoson county area that’s nice. Avoid Hampton.

But Newport News has the Oyster Point area that has anything and everything you’d want or need as far as restaurants and stores.

I64 can be a parking lot but generally even from James City County/ Williamsburg your only 20 minutes from Newport News.

I can’t tell you about taxes or any of that but I work with Law Enforcement and most Newport News officers don’t live in Newport News for reasons. Downtown Newport News and over by the shipyards is not desirable.

If you end up in VA, please join the VCDL. They/we are the biggest reason the democrats didn’t get away with CA style gun laws when the filthy criminals took all the state offices and the legislature. We’re currently good on the political front but VCDL never rests.

Shit hole…

I lived in Hampton while stationed for new construction at NN shipyard.

My advice is to stay north if you must stay in NN. Otherwise try to get over close to Langley area.

Listen to Garand Guy and Patriot. Spot on advice. Do not go anywhere near the shipyard.

My son in law welded at the shipyard and those influences have changed him and my daughter. Wish he had not been exposed.

I wouldn't look for a place in Newport News itself but would try York County or Poquoson if I were you. Anywhere in the local area will put you within an hour of two good airports and internet will be no problem. I live outside of Newport News in York County. Both are much better and safer places to live. Both York County and Poquoson have much better school systems than NN. Stay out of downtown Newport News and the Denbigh section. You can email me too if you have any questions. I have lived in the area since '73.

I really can not add anything current ... but in 1976 I went to a Coast Guard school here and loved the history in the area. No doubt things have changed since then.

Smithfield or Carrollton would be my choice of areas to live both in Isle of Wright County.

I can only echo what others have said.

I like to stay North of Newport News.

I applied to Newport News PD back in the day but there is no way I would live there.

Fort Eustis is expanding, the highway construction is ridiculous etc..

If you like baseball, the Peninsula Pilots play nearby and if you are a history buff, The Virginia War Museum is located in Huntington Park on Warwick Blvd. N The museum contains exhibits on American military history from 1775 to the present.

I love it and spend hours there.

I used to live in OysterPoint Apts, it was in the late 90s and NN was the murder capital of the US.

There will always be construction on 64.

Traffic is always gonna be bad regardless of where you live south of Ft. Eustis/Yorktown.

Thank you all for the info so far. Surrounding areas are definitely an option, though the preference would be less than a 30 or so minute commute. Her potential work location appears to be in just about the middle of Newport News, near Mariners Lake Natural area, Christopher Newport University, and Riverside Regional Medical Center.

I am about 45 minutes away from that area. As other's have mentioned stay away from the shipyard area especially at night. Oyster point area and North are nice area's. Hampton Roads is king of the tunnel traffic. We have so many tunnels here and traffic for them is really bad. FYI they are adding to the Hampton Roads Tunnel which should be done by 2025. Poquoson area might be a nice place too for you as it is a little more quiet near Langley AFB / NASA and still near the major highways, etc. I hope this helps. God Bless Smile
