Nissan Titan or Toyota Tundra? Login/Join

Looking to replace the Jeep Commander in the next 2 years. Its approaching 200k. I'd like something I can install a lift kit, brush guards, lights, etc, and make it a nice hunting rig.

I'd like the full size so I can write it off as business expense so it needs to be over 7,000 pounds and would use it for household projects and such.

I really wanted a Jeep Rubicon, but I don't think its rational. Its doesn't meet the weight or utility needs I'd like it to. It would be fun, but I don't have the room or finances for a third fun vehicle.

Would take it on road trips as well.

I've owned Ford and Dodge already. Looking to go with Toyota or Nissan as I hear they are more robust these days.

Thoughts?

Tony.

I believe the aftermarket accessory support will probably be better for the Toyota. Not as good as for a Tacoma, but still better than the Nissan.

My wife has a Nissan SUV and I've taken it in for oil changes a couple times and while waiting checked out the Titan XD. I was really impressed. If you don't really need a 3/4 ton it's a great compromise between a 1/2 and 3/4 ton. It has a lot of nice features too.

I was seriously considering one, but ended up buying a used one from family instead as I couldn't refusee the offer. Pretty sure my next one will be the Titan XD though.

I like the Nissan XD with the Cummings for towing and the Tundra TRD Pro for fun and work. Supposedly, Nissan is going to release A TRD Pro type model called the Warrior. All that said, I'm at 180k on my Toyota and going strong. Hard to beat their quality long-term.

When I bought my truck new in 2004 I could have got any truck I wanted.
Considered the Tundra as distant second choice.
I looked and drove everything.
I got a Titan.
I love it.
Since then all trucks have come a long way but still love the Titan.
To each their own I guess.
Titan for me.

Not sure but I would look to compare the wheel base on them both. The longer the better.

If you are over 21 yo forget about a lift. Put a taller tire on it if you really think you need more height.

Wink

Both great rigs.

Tundra, between the 2.
Never been a fan on the Titan.

F150 & Silverado/Sierra would probably get the nod from me over the Tundra in most instances.

Also, are we talking new or pre-owned?

I'm pretty pleased with my Tundra ('13) the newer ones are the same generation so, style-wise they're due for an update. Titans have a strong drivetrain but, styling and interior I wasn't a fan of. Aftermarket parts you can definitely find more for a Tundra. Reliablity has been top notch, no issues after 5+ years.

Funny you should ask as I've been conducting research on both these trucks for the last few weeks.

I test drove the 2019 models of both the Tundra and the Titan (not the XD). Each has their own strengths and weaknesses and it depends on which model (S, SV, SR, SR5, etc) you're thinking of getting.

For me the Tundra just had much better standard equipment at a lower or comparable price to the Titan. However, rather than buy new I picked up a low mileage 2017 Tundra SR5 with the TRD package this past weekend and couldn't be happier with it!

Good luck with your search and selection. It can be confusing with all the options, etc.

Just an FYI as I understand it you need a vehicle with a GVWR of 6K pounds not 7K to write off as a business expense...

Also, since your a Jeep guy do you know that they will be coming out with a 4 door pick up in a few months??

Thanks. I did drive a new Titan last year, a rental, on a trip to California and it was a really nice truck. I was really impressed. I picked it up with 20 miles on the odometer and returned it 2 days later with 1500.

I’ve never driven or owned a Toyota but the brand loyalty of their owners tells me I should consider it.

6k and I believe at least a 6 foot bed and a cap if you want to take Sec. 179 over $25k.

I have a 2014 double cab, long bed Tundra and have really enjoyed it. After 5 Chevies it is a nice change. I do have mine lifted up some just because the longer trucks just look like ass without a lift and bigger tires, imho. Mine has about 53k miles on it and no issues so far.

I just couldn't get past the looks of the Titan, looks bent at the rear of the front fender, or something.

I have had my titan since 2008. I like the way it handles although I would have thought it got better than the 15 mpg that I get.
I use to drive a Ram before this. I got a Titan in 2007 and 6 months later hit a pole and rolled it 5 times. Walked away. The Titan is lighter than the Ram and I was impressed after the accident.

I had an 07 Tundra double cab with 212k miles. Last year a wheel that came off a vehicle from the opposite direction of traffic hit me square in the grill at whatever our combined highway speeds were. Insurance totaled it and I got $12k. I took care of the truck, but bottom line, the Tundra holds it value well. No experience with the Titan.
