Do---or do not. There is no try. |
To my fellow Mac users—-has Apple gotten the initial hiccups and gremlins out of the Catalina OS 10.15.3 for me to upgrade from Mojave? Thanks!

I upgraded about 3 weeks ago, I think. So far, so good. No issues for me.

I'm not thrilled about a few features which disappeared ... but Safari bookmarks were not syncing between my SE and laptop. So I made the plunge. From El Cap to Catalina. Yep, Dinosaur Woodman, always the last to update an OS.

No issues with my upgrade on an 11" Mac Air. ********* "Some people are alive today because it's against the law to kill them".

I've had it on my Macbook Air for a couple of months - no issues. Don't know about Safari; I use Chrome.

If you use "Reminders" all of your other Mac OS devices need to be on Catalina as well. No sync without it

Of the four Macs I have, none of them have I upgraded (one will not run Catalina). I do have the latest (10.15.3) running in a Parallels virtual machine, just to see what it's all about. It seems to have stabilized quite a bit from when it was in beta, but seriously, none of the new "features" have any appeal for me, so I haven't "kept current." I hated it so much I bought a new (old stock) air running an older IOs. Catalina will not support some of my peripherals and software.

Works fine on my mid-2016 MacBook Pro. I lost one program since 32 bit programs are dead. I had to update my older Microsoft Office and software for the Fujitsu ScanSnap scanner, otherwise no problems switching to 64-bit software. You can check your software for compatibility prior to switching to Catalina. _________________________ “Remember, remember the fifth of November!"

I run VM Firmware and every time Apple does an upgrade I have to pay for an upgrade on their software. So No Thanks to Catalina. Apple is doing a greedy job of screwing it previous customers. If it ain't broke don't fix it. _________________________

I had a scanner that software was only available in 32 bit so killed that. Otherwise flawless for several months now. You only have integrity once. - imprezaguy02

There is absolutely no reason to get rid/have to upgrade from a high end scanner because of OS change, Windows or Macs. There are multiple ways to continue using older scanners. I have a Canon 9950F which had the ability to scan pretty much all types of negatives/slides. No way I was giving it up when I upgraded one of my Macs to Catalina. One way is Vuescan. Vuescan has been around for some time as a bridge for older scanners- VueScan supports over 6000 scanners from 42 manufacturers in a combination of 3 operating systems – Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. VueScan offers a range of advanced features for document, photo and film scanning. Most importantly, you can ‘Try before you buy’ as a full version of VueScan can be downloaded and tested for free. There are also other ways...

I just installed it on my 2010 MacBook Pro. Yes it’s a hackintosh now but I really like it so far.

Apple gives it away to run on their hardware. I doubt their upgrade schedule is designed to squeeze a few more bucks out of VM users.
How? Once again, it’s FREE to its existing customers. Furthermore, it is supported by machines nearly a decade old. If releasing free upgrades for a decade is screwing Apple’s customer base, then they suck at it. I have an older MacBook Pro. I will be moving it to Catalina with a third-party software so my new iPhone 11 Pro Max will sync to it. And, Apple Music will work. And, etc. It's just a home machine, so no worries if it doesn't work. I was glad to find the software that would give this old MBP new life. ------- Trying to simplify my life...

Rinehart, thanks for mentioning Vuescan. Ed Hamrick, now with his son David, has been maintaining and upgrading his Vuescan since 1991. I use it for my Nikon ED 5000 Coolscan if I digitize slides with that method. There IS an upgrade to Catalina available on the website, VueScan.com. _________________________ “Remember, remember the fifth of November!"

For quite a long time you could also download a "Twain" plugin for Adobe Photoshop and scan directly into PS. This worked on a lot of "outdated" scanners. (I don't believe that this works anymore on the new PS versions). I have a couple of older slide scanners that were quite expensive in their day. If you go to their site they want to sell you a new one and say they are not supported. Vuescan works with them as well. Like a number of SF members I've worked across several OS platforms for years. We still run some older computers and devices successfully. BTW, don't believe the stories where you have to trash all older printers as well with new OS installation (Windows or Mac). Windows 10 has a setup route for older devices as well as workarounds. Usually on the Mac side the GMP drivers give you free routes for old printers. You may lose a few tweak settings on adjustments but printing capability is not lost. This message has been edited. Last edited by: Rinehart,

i did have an issue crop up on my iMac after loading Catalina. My mail and Safari would "lock up" and become unresponsive. I would have to hard boot the machine as it would not restart or shut down with the normal procedures. The final solution that cured the issue after numerous visits to Apple tech was to remove free Avast anti virus. No problems since removal of Avast. The tech that finally got me through the issue said Malware Bytes works much better. Sometimes it helps to periodically rebuild your mail account on Macs. (If you are one of the browser mail fans ignore). You may need to rebuild a mailbox to update the list of messages it contains. For example, if messages appear to be missing or garbled, or if you can’t find all relevant messages when you search using the Entire Message search option. In the Mail app on your Mac, select a mailbox in the sidebar. Choose Mailbox > Rebuild. Depending on number of emails it may take a while.
