Does this have to do with France raising the retirement age from 62 to 64?

I don't care for the way he's pushed the retirement age through but the French (and a lot of others) also have to understand basic math.
All these social and benefit programs can't continue to be paid out of thin air.
We have similar problems with Social Security, much due to adding benefits that weren't there when it was designed, people are living longer and the population not increasing at the same rate as in the past.
Even so, ours has much higher age requirements and it still needs some work to kick the can down the road.

I think it does have to do with raising the retirement age.

As a related aside -

Has anyone recently listened to the French National Anthem?

It has to do with “making heads roll”.

If you are not familiar with it a good rendition can be found here:

https://youtu.be/7MQ-SC9bmp4o

It includes English subtitles.

Called La Marseillaise, sung by Mirelle Mathieu

“Inspirational” is a word that comes to mind when I listen to it.

Yeah, I don't know if they're rioting because the retirement age will go 62 to 64.....or they're pissed he circumvented the legislature to get it done.

My wife, daughter and MIL land in Paris later this week. Ought to be fun.

So, instead of being lazy parasites for 62 years before they retire and do even more nothing, they will have to do nothing for two more years before they can do less nothing?

I was going to say, little column A, a lot of column B.

However, if the laws of France permit a ruler to decree these things, then they need to change the laws and probably their ruler.

France had a somewhat exciting governmental change some time back that ended badly for a lot of people. I wonder if there's still enough fire in their veins to do the same now? The popular version goes that it was over bread prices. Retirement is nearly as big a deal to some people.

Socialists are never good at practical math.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Viktor Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning, 1946.

I'd say you have that backwards. They're much more pissed about the raising of the retirement age than how it was raised. I assure you, if they went through the normal legislative process and raised the age anyway, they'd still be rioting just as hard.
