Ellie was nice girl and pretty too. The wife and I fall asleep watching "Ange". I can hardly wait to ask her about the rifle rack.

It's a TV show from a long ago era. Most people probably didn't even notice that details
.

Good guess.

That, or it is just an unrealistic set piece.

And, yes, Ellie was Andy's best girlfriend. Wasn't she only on for a year?

or am I dreaming that ...

There were a few times.

In one episode, Andy retrieves and loads his revolver after getting a letter from an ex-con that he had sent to prison stating that the con was going to "pay him a visit". (It turned out to be a friendly visit.)

In another, Andy carries a shotgun while going to a warehouse to apprehend an escaped convict hiding out inside.

And in a third episode, Andy uses Warren's revolver to fire at fleeing counterfeiters.

There is also the episode in the 1st season called Barney Gets His Man. He accidently snags a guy the State Police were looking for. He then escaped from the State Police and comes back for Barney. Andy long guns up in that one too.

In a lot of the early episodes there is not even a lock bar on the rifle rack at all.

Ya know, there was a time here in 'merica when rifle racks were made to hold guns, not protect them from theft or leftists (I repeat myself). I don't remember or ever knew what happened to the gun rack that inhabited my fathers "den". Of course every one who happened past knew dad had guns in the house. My mother particularly because she hated it. She was one of the leftists we talk about. I never knew how deeply her feelings were.

Anyway, you could easily see it from the street during the warm months because the front door was open It was an air flow kind of thing. Looking back, I appreciate now the fight dad had to put up to score his measly collection.

So things have changed over the last 60 or 70 years. I built this house 10 years ago, and I didn't ever think about not having a safe. No, not a gun safe, but a walk in vault. I gave my 2 free standing safes to my sons.

We're judging poor old Andy through today's standards. 1950 to 1960 when the show took place, or I assume it was set, was different than now. You just didn't go around stealing someone's guns. About the 2nd break in and gun theft had the entire community up in alert. Besides, breaking in would be easy, transporting guns would attract a lot of attention, even in a gun friendly state.

I think it was Dillinger who was asked why he robbed banks, he replied it was because thats where the money was. Police stations might have guns, but they're pretty utilitarian and not worth much. I know, I've become a snob, but I don't care. I demand that a gun not just function well, but look nice and be well thought of. I can't imagine breaking into a cop shop for the guns they generally keep in inventory.

My view is that its not fair to Andy or Barney to judge them by today's "views", or at least today's PC views.

I liked Peggy better.

Ellie was in 12 episodes.

Funny we have Andy who rarely carries a gun and is the town Sheriff and then there is Lucas Mcain and if I remember there are only 4 episodes in the entire season where Mcain did not kill someone.

And, since I was a History major (& like to research stuff), I'll add that there have been stories that Ellie (Elinor Donahue, best known for "Father Knows Best") did not get along very well with Andy.

The actress that played Peggy was Joanna Moore, who was Tatum O'Neal's mother. Joanna Moore & Ryan O'Neal were only married for about 4 years, but they had Tatum and Griffin (now there's some interesting reading). Joanna Moore died in 1997, after her daughter Tatum had supported her for a number of years. Allegedly, Joanna Moore had some drug & drinking issues of her own.

If one is sitting at the desk one won't get Conked on the head by a long barreled shotgun in the event of an earthquake.

I've looked at that rack many times, trying to figure out what's in there. I think one looks like an '03 Springfield.
