There’s a thread in The Lair that covers blade shaving, mostly covering the paraphernalia associated with blade shaving. This is a poll on the act of shaving, and here’s why. Several months ago now, the corporation that owns the mug shaving soap “Williams,” decided to discontinue manufacturing and marketing the soap. It happens that Williams was the oldest shaving soap marketed in the U.S., the brand going all the way back to 1840 when Van Buren was President. Despite the fact that Williams was still the biggest seller in the U.S. there was obviously no profit margin for an item as inexpensive as this in the numbers it was selling. Led me to wonder, “How many men are shaving with a mug and a brush?” How many aren’t shaving at all?

Here’s the poll:

Question:
Do you shave your face?

Choices:
Yes
No

Question:
Do you shave with an electric razor, or some sort of blade?

Choices:
Electric
Blade
Both, on occasion
N/A

Question:
If a blade, what type?

Choices:
Replaceable Multi-blade
Disposable Multi-blade
Single-edged injector
Single-edged disposable
Double-edged razor
Straight razor
Other
N/A

Question:
Blade shavers, shaving cream or soap

Choices:
Canned shaving cream
Mug and a brush
Stick (like Palmolive) and brush
Other
N/A

Question:
Do you shave a different way when you have the time? I.e. straight razor occasionally

Choices:
Yes
No
N/A

Question:
Sorry, going back to electric razors. What type?

Choices:
Foil
Rotary
N/A

I don’t shave my face so I answered no for the first question.

I can’t complete the poll though because I can’t answer the second question since I don’t use either.

I happen to use both an electric or a blade depending on my mood.

Your poll only gives me the option of one or the other.

Safety razor for me. I like the brush/mug, but will often just do it when in the shower, too.

There were bound to be weaknesses in the poll, two already apparent are those who use more than one method of shaving, and second, I needed a “N/A” option for every question in order for those who don’t shave to have their vote count. I think I’ll edit the poll, that action WILL reset the votes, but, it’s early.

Shave with rotory electric most days, and a multi blade disposable once a week and to get an extra close shave if we're going out somewhere special.

I tried Harry's and I wasn't overly impressed with the shave. Not bad but not better than a cheap-o disposable. I also don't like their politics so no more Harry's for me.

Blade shave my whole head daily. Disposables never seemed to work as well as the replaceable heads. When prepping for bodybuilding shows the whole body gets done with blades every four days for a month. I tried an expensive electric razor but broke out real bad with ingrown hairs, and it just never got as smooth as the blade.

Disposable. Flex multi blade because the straight blades pull your whiskers out. Water only.

I use 3 blade disposables and just shave in the shower without anything once my face warms up.

I shave my head once a week the same way.

You could have chosen N/A (not applicable)

Lithog, the “N/A” option wasn’t available when PH made that post. I added N/A to every question so that those who don’t shave can complete the poll and we can learn about how many full beard members there are.

I've used the same Trac II system (twin blade cartridges) since about 1970. I recall (barely) that I tried several different systems over a period of two or three years, but kept coming back to the Trac II.

I've had several handles over the years, but I am still using the original light plastic handle. I did have to re-work it at one point when the blade carrier part came loose from the handle proper. I threaded the hollow plastic handle to accept a sheet metal screw, ground down the head of the screw a little, and soldered the blade bracket to it. This repair has held up for over 30 years now, and shows no signs of deterioration. Contrast this with the heavy solid brass one-piece handle that I used for a while that rotted away within a few years of daily use. The tnin flanges that capture the blade cartridge just got too thin to resist normal shaving pressure.

As far as shaving cream goes, I am generally happy with whatever canned aerosol product I can find on sale, but I will admit that shaving soap with an application brush feels very luxurious. Unfortunately, shelf space by the bathroom sink for the shaving soap holder is a scarce commodity, and jealously guarded by the better half.

I shave 2 or 3 times a week with a 3 blade disposable, almost always in the shower. If we’re going somewhere, I’ll do a quick clean up with an electric.

With mace, in the dark. Razz

I shave, if not every day, no less than every 2 days. I use various (whatever is on sale) multi-blade disposables. I have a rotary electric, but only use it, if at all, for quickie touch-ups. It just doesn't give me a smooth shave like a blade. This is typically done while I'm showering.

I shave in the shower daily. Can’t stand stubble because it itches.
Use a gillette handle (because I owned it before they went woke)and replaceable cartridge (not Gillette). I use the generic brand foam shave cream…whatever’s cheap when I shop
