Late to the party, there is a VA hosp. in Temple, along with the Army Hosp. on Ft. Hood. You'd be close enough to use the commisary, and if you use the pharmacy at Ft. Hood it will make any prescriptions free if they are formulary or generic. Also have heard good things about the Base hosp.
We have a minor league bassball team in Round Rock that is the AAA team for the Texas Rangers. Pretty nice little ballpark and reasonable to take the family to. Lots to see and do in the area, greatest people around.

Mrs. Mike is waiting for the official job qualification and offer. I found her looking for schools (The Tomminator is 9 and in 3rd grade)

I've been on Zillow, and it seems like a same size home (4br/3bath) is about 50K more in Texas...but it seems like the location is the driving thing.

I want a 3bdr/2bath and more land where I can shoot..(can you do that there is you have a safe place??)

True, the traffic problems are compounded by the construction on I-35. Maybe some day it will be finished, but it has been continuously under construction since I moved to Texas.

That was in July 1971.

But it could be worse. I-45 in Houston has been under construction since 1949. Wink

I'll pitch in, too.

I live 25 miles from Temple and 25 miles from Waco and frequent both...well, frequently!

I'll answer your questions below in blue:

Specifically:
Can I bring my suppressed weapons?
Yup! You will also be close to Capitol Armory and Silencer Shop in Austin. I've purchased cans from both and they are a pleasure to do business with!

Any kind of restrictions on guns?
None that I am aware of in Temple. However, my memory is faint...but I remember a poorly handled open carry case in the recent history. I'll try to find a link.

Anywhere to shoot nearby?
Plenty of places. I'm a member at a private gun range north of Waco but ranges are plentiful as well as private land to shoot on.

What else do I need to know?
I've been told that Bell County has retarded property taxes. Might look into that.

Or ask?

There are some areas in Temple that I won't do more than drive through...but that is in any city/town.

I would also echo the concern about schools for your 9 year old. Choose your residence carefully so you are in a good school.
If you can live outside of Temple proper, you will probably find better educational opportunities. Lots of little towns around...I live in one...that offer good schools and close commute to Temple.

Very nice. Met with a realtor and a contractor.

When the contractor heard we were moving from NC he reached out his hand and said, "Welcome to Texas"!

I think in I'm gonna like it here.

Will do, we fly back to NC Saturday, then get our home ready for market and plan on moving after the school year ends-"The Tomminator" finishes classes in the second week of June.

We signed a contract on a new home that will be finished around August....

we will be suburbanites again, sigh....I wanted 10 acres in the middle of nowhere....

We will move around late June and go into temporary housing.

i imagine I will need long term (temporary) housing for our K9 until the house is built..anyone got any ideas?

Is there a foster network for rescue pets in the area? Might be able to utilize that in return for a donation to help their cause.

The best news in all of this is you will be close to College Station the real jewel in Central Texas. You can enjoy real college football there with the Fighting Texas Aggies.

The largest conservative student body left.
Full of great kids who will make Texas proud for the next several generations.

Be sure to visit the Corps Center there and check out the gun collection there on campus. They have SN 1 Colt Patterson there. Lots of Corps history, a listing of flag officers, WW1 & WW2 era exhibits.

On your way in or out stop in Snook for some sausage and Kolaches !
