Professional sports is the excuse many men use to sit around on weekends drinking beer in front of a TV.

The only professional sport I tend to watch is hockey, and only if it's the only thing on and I don't have anything more productive to be doing. If someone else has a sport on I may watch, but I usually don't seek it out. ------------- $

Shoot, I like sports. I don't watch much sports at all on TV nowadays, especially football, but I played them all as a kid and loved the heck out of them. .....never marry a woman who is mean to your waitress.

Yes, you've got a good understanding of the concept. It's quite enjoyable. You did forget the part about grilled or smoked meat, but you've got the general idea. Jesse Sic Semper Tyrannis

I absolutely despise professional sports except for Rays baseball, TB Bucs football and TB Lightning hockey. And most anything associated with them. *************************** Knowing more by accident than on purpose.

The only professional sport teams I watch are the Baltimore Orioles and the Tampa Rays. We do travel around to watch various minor league baseball and hockey games. Every year we try to travel to Tampa to see the Orioles and the Rays play. It is our vacation, and I get to travel nearby scoping places to live for when I relocate. I also like to watch arena football especially the Tampa Storm. But the NFL and NBA, No, Nope, Never. I don't even watch pro hockey anymore.

Optimistic Cynic |
I used to be a fairly consistent follower of the home town teams, and by extension, the other teams in their leagues. Watched almost every game, bought team-branded merchandise, coveted unavailable game tickets (football), enjoyed discussing sports with other fans, and occasionally attended hockey and baseball games. Over the past ten years I have gradually lost interest for a variety of reasons, but mostly, simply because the games no longer entertain me. Whether this is chicken or egg, I don't know, nor do I care about analyzing the why of it, whether the sports world changed, or whether it was me. I have never been much of a gambler, so that aspect of pro sports never got a hold on me, although I recognize that it is the major motivator for many fans. It all seems fairly silly to me now. People wasting so much time, energy, attention, and money on such trivial matters. Maybe I just grew up? (my wife would dispute that statement! :-)

One of my friends has navigated this just fine and is a declared "no stick and ball sports" guy. As long as you don't go too deep in details, most sports guys are also at least peripherally car guys as well. Personally I'd rather just listen and walk away sooner than fake it and look like a tool. Nobody's judging you, and they certainly won't take away the man card from a car and gun guy! Personally I've never understood how folks can find the time to follow 3-4 major sports, pro and college, year round. I just can't identify where that time would come from unless I became "that guy" who didn't get jack shit done around the house, with family, at work, etc. We are admittedly big college football fans, but even that gets balance with other commitments and is isolated to 3 months each fall. We joke that we have to get everything we need to done before Labor Day, or it waits until Dec/Jan. You only have integrity once. - imprezaguy02

Yeah, that M14 video guy... |
I gave up following any sports on Dec 27th, 1991. My step dad followed the 49ers in the 80's and 90's. Once I joined the Marines, I hardly ever saw another game of any sort. Baseball is too boring to watch. Basketball is all smack-talk. None of that interests me. Tony. Put me in the zero interest category. I was drug kicking and screaming to have a fantasy football team for the first time this year because my group desperately needed a tenth member in their league. Or fifth. Or whatever. I autofilled during draft and never touched it a single time. I’m also a social leper during March madness.

I used to play. So it was hard to watch. Now I don't care. So I have no clue as to the culture of sports. You’re a lying dog-faced pony soldier

Far from it. In fact: There are more than a couple of SFites that have a downright dislike of pro sports. I'm one of them. One of the many reasons got my wife and I again. There are programs, series', that we watch. They have story lines. Plots. We cannot always be glued to the TV, so we set up the ones that are important to us to be recorded. Then another gorram fracking sports crap thing runs overtime again, delays all the following programs, and we miss part of the program we wanted Other guys seem astonished when they start talking about one-or-another game, team or player, I become noncommittal, they ask "Do you follow <whatever>?" "No." "Really?" "Yes, really." At which point I have to bite my tongue to keep from offending said individual by telling him what I really think.
That would be a variation on one of those things. "America is at that awkward stage. It's too late to work within the system,,,, but too early to shoot the bastards." -- Claire Wolfe "If we let things terrify us, life will not be worth living." -- Seneca the Younger, Roman Stoic philosopher

I follow football, both college and pro, although I found myself watching more college and less pro this season. Baseball, basketball, most others are just boring and I don't watch them. Some of the winter Olympic stuff is interesting, mostly the downhill and slalom stuff, but it only comes around every four years. Otherwise, I'd rather watch a movie or read a book. Or go shooting.

I think the business of sports has hurt if not ruined the experience for many. When I was a kid > we did some sport everyday of the year. It was great fun. As we get older we gravitate to certain ones of interest. As a kid I was in love with basketball but I despise it now. As a kid I loved baseball and now just ambivalent at best. Now I love Golf (all golf Pro or otherwise) and some football (but that took a hit this year). It used to be that the athlete and the common guy could relate somewhat but now that difference is far, far apart. Very sad.

Grew up playing all three sports. My hero's were sports guy's. Willis Reed and the Knicks. Earl the Pearl, Clyde, Debuscher and bradley. The celtic's were amazing in the day. Havlichek, Cowens, Cheney, etc. The Rams, Roman Gabriel, Merlin Olson and the like. While there has been a decline there is no doubt with the all about me mentality. The competition and producing in the clutch has always been what interest's me the most. What they can do under pressure. Now baseball is more my sports passion. I could do with out. But I do still enjoy it. "Practice like you want to play in the game"
