Look at the Subaru Impreza. Good mpg. All-wheel drive. Good crash protection.
Or, for more fun, try a BRZ. Mine is averaging 30.3 around town and closer to 40 on the highway.

I am tall and hated a rental Cruze I had.

If you're buying used. It really is hard to beat a diesel volkswagon. Other than that I'd stick with a corolla or civic.

Why when discussing fuel mileage, diesel owner's will state that their XXX gets YY miles to the gallon? So what? It's burning diesel fuel, which isn't gasoline, so don't conflate the two.

It would be better if you would state that "My diesel gets XX miles per $10 worth of fuel." At least then the two could be compared. A diesel that gets 50mpg has the same fuel cost as a gas vehicle that gets 45mpg, before you consider the other added diesel expenses. There's a lot of gasoline cars near that 45mpg mark nowadays.

That is true, but not in the "beater" category. Volkswagon has been making diesel cars getting 50 mpg since the 70's. And if it's a non mechanical diesel, you can run it on half used drain oil. A buddy of mine has been running his old 7.3 powerstroke F250 on 50% used engine oil, without doing anything to the oil before pouring it into his fuel tank for 7 years. The truck actually is more powerful on the drain oil and has no visible smoke and much quieter at idle. He's a marine diesel mechanic.

New isn’t a consideration. I’m looking for fuel economy and reliability. Beater class. I’d forgotten about Mazda. So far I’m not seeing any mention of specific years or engines to avoid.

The low compression, port injected engines of the late 90's to mid 2000's are hard to beat, no matter who built it. It was the perfect time of high reliability before the CAFE standards screwed everybody. A well maintained late 90's Civic or similar will run nearly forever. Avoid any direct injected gasoline engine. They're probably too new to be in the beater category anyway, but I'd like to see how quickly their intake valves clog after those engines develop a little blow-by. I bet you won't ever see 300K GDI engines.

From your list, Civic or Corolla. Good luck finding one, both are in demand.

What do you mean? Do you say that because diesel fuel is more expensive than gasoline where you live?
Around here diesel used to be a lot cheaper than gasoline... but now they are roughly equal in price/gallon.

"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible."

I’ll chime in here on the diesel front. I have an Audi Q7 that had a gen 2 motor that had the .gov fix. The fix worked perfectly. Changes some of the shift points but mileage and reliability have been great. I would seriously look at a vw diesel as a commuter car.

I picked up a used FiST last fall. Funnest car ever (and gets good mileage, to boot.)

I'll throw in another vote for Mazda. My wife bought an '18 through Costco's program and saved a bunch. The Mazda3 has great fuel economy, is reliable and it's quite sporty too. They did an update for 2019 but I have no idea as to the differences.

I've had a 2015 Honda Civic SE for a year now,

bought as a CPO, 30K,
I'm at 48K now, nothing but 2 oil changes done,

rides well, CVT takes a bit to get used to,

mileage was 36 when I bought it, then dropped to 34 with winter blend gas, it is starting to creep up a bit now, back to 35 using the onboard computer
