A new (to me) saltine cracker – quite good and none broken
The brand is Saladitas. I found ‘em in a Kroger grocery store and they’re excellent. A 14.7 ounce box contains two sleeves of crackers, each wrapped in metalized Mylar to keep ‘em fresh.

Each sleeve has eight 8” x 4” flakes. Each flake is scored/perforated to form a 4 x 2 array of eight 2” x 2” crackers, nicely, and uniformly, toasted.

The first sleeve had zero broken crackers. I haven’t opened the second sleeve yet.

Their flavor is good – more like SkyFlakes than any other cracker that I know of. Mild, so they don’t distract from a subtle cheese such as brie.

Made in Mexico. Also available on Amazon:

Amazon shows two varieties: regular and salted. My store had only the salted variety. 370mg sodium per 29g serving.

Those are good. Sometimes our local grocery store has them in boxes of individually packaged crackers for convenient travel and picnic use.

No kidding. In what other forum can one obtain a detailed review of a given brand of saltines?

No I didn’t. I mentioned SkyFlakes in the initial post of this thread. And I had multiple posts in the SkyFlakes thread. Furthermore, the SkyFlakes thread is in “What’s Your Deal!”, and I have no complaints about Saladitas crackers.

BTW – my first box of SkyFlakes had zero broken crackers. The second box had LOTS of broken crackers. Both boxes were delivered by Amazon.

^Wasn't referring to you, Pipesmoker. I was just joining in with people commenting on the overall cracker seriousness.

That's weird. Sounds more like an Amazon problem, though. Some of those delivery peeps have quite the throwing arm.

^^^^^^^^

Yep, I have been buying Skyflakes for years at H-Mart, not one single broken cracker.

I used to like saltine's. But I no longer patronize nabisco for a few reasons. I was interested in this possibility until Mexico.

I've switched to water crackers and variations from Dare or Carr.

What I found interesting was the unacceptability of broken crackers. I didn't know that was a thing. I've always just expected broken cracker, cookies, crumbs each time. Smile

Then you might consider SkyFlakes, which aren’t made in Mexico. They’re made in the Philippines. Smile

Saltines are commodity crackers, so I find it odd that the two brands that taste best to me were developed in second world countries. Furthermore, SkyFlakes and Saladitas are the only two brands of saltines I know of that have few or no broken crackers in a box. Baring Amazon delivery, of course.

Crackers are pretty simple to bake, if yall are going to take them that seriously.

Cracker Barrel used to have a really nice brand of saltines. I can't recall the name offhand, but the packaging was blue and white, typical restaurant-style 2-pack. They were lightly colored, slightly thicker than average saltines.

SkyFlakes and Saladitas are both superior saltine crackers with few or no broken crackers per box (baring Amazon delivery). And similar enough to invite comparison. My report:

Packaging – Advantage: SkyFlakes.

SkyFlakes: A rigid plastic box has four rows of packets. Each row has eight packets. Each metalized Mylar packet contains three flakes, perforated for breaking into three crackers. The nine-cracker SkyFlakes packets are a handy size for me.

Saladitas: A cardboard box has two sleeves of crackers. Each metalized Mylar sleeve contains eight 8” x 4” flakes. Each flake is perforated to form a 4 x 2 array of eight crackers. The Saladitas sleeves have to be cut open to get the eight large flakes out intact. Then I have to put the unused flakes into a zip-lock bag to keep ‘em fresh.

Cracker form – Advantage: SkyFlakes.

SkyFlakes: Each cracker is about 2-1/4” x 1-1/4”. I like the rectangular form

Saladitas: Each cracker is about 2” x 2”. The square form is quite acceptable.

Flavor – Advantage: Saladitas.

Flavor is subjective – strictly a matter of personal preference, but here are two objective observations:

#1 – Saladitas crackers are clearly more toasted than SkyFlakes.

#2 – Salt, from nutrition data on the boxes:
SkyFlakes: 110mg per 25g serving = 0.44%
Saladitas: 370mg per 29g serving = 1.28%

I like toasty and, within limits, salty. Before anyone goes off the rails, bloodwork always reports my sodium and chloride levels near, or even below, the lower end of the recommended range.

Summary
SkyFlakes have the advantage in every category except flavor. But for me flavor is the most important category.

By George! Saladitas has just pulled further ahead of SkyFlakes. My Kroger store offers Saladitas saltines in two types of boxes:

Box type 1:
https://a.co/d/fpIfrYU

Box type 2:
https://a.co/d/jgOPxQr

I’ve been buying box type 1, and I had assumed that the only difference between the two was quantity. I was wrong. I’ve just discovered that the physical form of the crackers is hugely different in the two box types. And I like the physical form in box type 2 much better. (Same excellent flavor though)

The contents of box type 1 are as I described in the OP.

The contents of box type 2: Each one-pound box has 48 sealed metalized Mylar packets. Each packet contains three flakes. Each flake is about 3” x 1.5”, perforated so it can be broken into two 1.5” x 1.5” crackers if you wish.

The right-sized packets and rectangular form are much better for me. And, so far, no broken crackers in this box either. I love these crackers. The best-tasting saltines that I’ve ever found. And now, superior packaging to boot.

Moderate price too. At my Kroger store:
Box type 1: $3.99
Box type 2: $5.49 (but on sale for $3.99)

BTW – Member arfmel mentioned the packet form in the second post of this thread but I didn’t understand it at the time.
