They won't stay fresh as long if you wash them. Not sure if you knew that. Wink

Yeah, it's kind of gross if you think about it. I just don't think about it. I'll leave mine out unrefrigerated for week and think nothing of it.

Yup, don’t wash.. and you hadn’t offered up the other name options. “The waiting darkness” has a nice ring!
And that centipede is the stuff of nightmares. Geez.

The get stored in the pantry without washing. We keep a dozen washed ones in the fridge so that they are ready to go.

We always had a barnyard full of chickens on the farm when I was growing up. Watching them over the years attacking bugs frogs snakes cats dogs and simetimes people, I often thought, we are fortunate they don't get much bigger.

My daughter names her chickens. She has “biscuits”, “tenders”, “nugget”, etc. It’s impossible to see them as a threat.
Then there were the names of her turkeys and that poor police officer…

We have them down here, also. This guy emerged after a monsoon storm one year. It was actually about 9" long before being hosed by a can and a half of wasp/hornet spray. I understand their bite can be quite painful, so I shudder seeing that on one your hand.

Roadrunners with snakes and lizards.
The first time you see it happen it's a freightening sight.
There's flipping, chasing, stomping gnashing, slashing, tossing flailing, mashing ,ripping and tearing.

About once a summer you used to be able to witness the madness.

It was never one blow and done deal. I mean wicked

I’m glad you think my balls are the thing of my signature line that Para speaks of, but Henry, that just isn’t the case. It would take multiple suitcases of money to let that nasty, terrifying, disgusting, motherfucker crawl on me. Not a fucking chance.

Plus the guy in the photo I posted isn’t tattooed like I am. My arms give me away pretty easily.

Yum!

There are many parts of the world where you eat what you can grow or catch or you don't eat. Might as well make the best of it.

No. Just no….. But, OP, can you do us a solid and catch that action on video next time? Maybe throw one of those beasts down in front of “the waiting darkness” (yes, I’ve renamed your chicken in my mind). Then we could have the guy from Oz narrate- it’d be Cool

When I was in high school, I spent a month in Brazil. We were up in the northern raiforesty part for the first few weeks, staying in huts with tile roofs and no ceilings. There were all manner of creepy crawleys running around in the roofing, including tarantulas, lizards, and frogs. These were of course initially a source of terror to us soft, suburbanite American kids, but the locals paid them no mind, and we eventually came to accept them as part of life.

Then one day, we were eating dinner in the big central hut, and the missionary we were working with (who knew bugs...he had a doctorate in entomology) grabbed a big stick and started smacking at something on the ceiling. A centipede that looked a lot like the sucker in your picture, but with different coloration and about a foot long, fell off the ceiling and started running around on the floor. One of the locals came running in with a giant knife, and the two of them hacked and smashed it to death.

It was an unpleasant realization to most of us that such things even existed, and even more concerning that the locals were upset enough by them to invoke the sort of reaction that we had just witnessed. To make matters worse, we now knew what to look for, and with 30 pairs of eyes constantly peeled, we started finding them all over the place. I barely slept for the next three weeks until we got on the plane to Brasilia and got out of the rainforest.

The midwestern United States may be flat and boring, but at least we don't have crap like that creeping around!

I’ll have to be quicker next time because this sounds like a win.

many many years ago, my grandparents (in the city, unthinkable then) had a chicken coop

birds, the chickens left alone,

mice and rats, the chickens, if they could catch them, tore up,

I would go in the coop in the afternoon with a water hose and catch a bird or 2 and get them soaked, ,
chickens could care less, so the cat got them

however a mouse or small rat would pop up now and again, and I would hose it down till the chickens got it,

there was nothing left,
