F150 owners: your engine choice 2.7 3.5 or 5.0 Login/Join

After a newly discovered water leak in my 2019 Ram I’m looking to get a 2021 F150.

I have yet to drive one but I’m trying to decide which engine I want. Let’s start by saying I do no towing or heavy hauling. I get the occasion yard of mulch or topsoil.

I hear people say the 2.7 ecoboost runs surprisingly well. I was leaning towards the 3.5 for the balance between power and fuel economy. The 5.0 is your regular v8.

Dealers around here have more 2.7 engines on the lot. I don’t know if that means they are more popular or are not selling?

Does anyone have any thing good or bad to say about the engine choices?

I had a 2016 2wd XLT SCrew with the 2.7
Put about 36k on it, only got rid of it because of the incessant squeak/rattle from the panoramic sunroof that the dealer couldn't fix.

Towed a decent sized cargo trailer with no issue.
Averaged 19-21 mpg in mixed daily driving. Best was nearly 25mpg between Albuquerque & Houston.

My mom has a 2011 4wd SCrew Lariat with the 3.5, pretty issue free that I'm aware of. She town a horse trailer with it, regularly.
Pretty sure she has over 100k on it & not in any hurry to get out of it.

No experience with the Coyote.

I don't think you could go wrong with anyone of those choices, for the money I think the 5Oh is less than the turbo versions, at least at one time the EcoBoost engines were more expensive.

I have a 2018 4x4 with the 5.0 and my best buddy has a 2017 4x4 with the 3.5 Ecoboost. Neither has had any problems. Until I put KO2's on it, I was getting 21mpg on the highway, now I get around 19.5. My buddy (with regular street tires) get 23.5 on the highway.

Can't believe that the eco gets better mileage. I accelerate a little too much probably, but I get 16-17mpg in a car with the 2.7tt in it.

My choice would be "none of the above."

Not the V8, nor either of the turbo-charged V6 engines.

My needs would be best met by the normally aspirated 3.3L V6. Simple is good.

I imagine AWD drivetrain losses account for a lot of it on the Fusion.

Big Grin
Just a bit. Add in 380acp for the 2.7

Or maybe it's 9mm 40sw & 45acp?

Absent any obvious mitigating factors I would get the 5.0. Turbo's just plain need more upkeep. Now you do get some money in advance on that maintenance since the gas mileage will be better, but I'd rather have the long term reliability.

I had a 2015 F150 with the 2.7 EB and loved it. Put almost 60K on it before trading it for a 2019 Ranger.

Never any issues, avg 20 mpg for the four and a half years I had it.

Great performance and no “extra” maint required due to the Turbo.

I have had 2 3.5s and they are a beast of a motor. I recently got a 2019 platinum and had my choice of motors and did not hesitate to get another 3.5. They are a beast of a motor and the power down low is very impressive. You really can’t go wrong with any of the motor choices though.

I have a 2017 F-150 with a 5.0 and my current work car is a 2016 Expedition with the 3.5.

I like them both a lot and both get very similar practical mileage. It's sort of a six of one half dozen the other choice. Pick the one you can get the best deal on.
