Stay out of Asheville. It’s a growing commie enclave. Great beer, beautiful, but eat up with hippies and libs. Congrats on the escape. I grew up in central NC and other than the heat/humidity it’s a wonderful place.

Even more of a reason for him to move there and balance the region back to the middle if not tilt it right.

We moved to Tennessee 2 years ago for the same reasons. Best decision weve ever made. We have far more and BETTER friends here than we ever did in California. The Bay Area was getting crazy. I retired from the Alameda Co. Sheriffs Office after 23 years. I had planned to work to 53 or maybe 55. Would have meant 12 to 18% more money, but I was done.

Get your concealed carry asap

We tell people we ESCAPED from California, seems to go over better.

Congrats

Asheville is the San Francisco of the state.
Raleigh, Durham, Charlotte and any city over about 50k is solidly dem run...the sickness is there just growing.

My parents live in the mountains and I love it there. The sheriff is a classmate of mine. Solid conservative people live there, but even in their county there are raging libs- because they move to NC to escape the shitshow they lived in and then begin the same shit they left.

My moms neighbor is Canadian and has homes on fla and NC and she recently got bagged for tAx fraud..claiming she lived in Fla most of the year- yet was there in NC for ten months a year. Then complains at a neighborhood party about it and each and every person there called her out on her shit...she left the party and has posted the home for sale citing that she can’t live there because “all the neighbors are crazy”

She got called out on her online remarks too(forgot that mom is a friend on her FB)...

So, enjoy your new home state and remember the crazy libs are everywhere

If you do end up in Asheville, look me up. Been here 25 years, and yes, it has changed quite a bit. Still a beautiful place to live and still enough conservatives and gun culture. Plus, access to great trout fishing, beer, mountain biking and hiking in the mountains.

Congrats on your move and I hope all goes well.

We left Virginia for the Durham area because of the other halfs job with Uncle Sam.

I hope you are happy in Western NC but I am not sure where that really is. I will say that I despise the Durham area.

I lived in the Kannapolis/Concord area during the two years I worked at the Medical Examiners Office in Charlotte. Now, I really enjoyed my time living in that area and I find it a neat place to eat and shop.

We are in contract on a house in Shelby. I may hit you up for some local info once we settle in.

Shelby is in Cleveland County

I like that area and did a large number of motor vehicle fatality investigations there.

I liked the area so much I keep trying to get on with the local LE office.

It is nice small(ish) town that is on State Route 74 that serves as a cut trough for people heading east/west from Charlotte/ Asheville. IF you like hiking, you are in a great area with Crowders and South Mountain (SP) both within 50 minutes, and Lake Lure/ Chimney Rock about an hour.

My email is in my profile, and would be glad to assist with as much info as needed.

Background (superfluous)
The job market in Cleveland/ Gaston County area was decimated in the late 1990's as a result of their dependence on manufacturing related to fabric and mill work. A large part of jobs in those Counties were dependent on the furniture industry, which had flourished for well over 100 years in the Counties of Catawba, Burke and Caldwell (all to the north of Cleveland), which was once considered the furniture capital of the world. During the mid 1900's, 30-40% of all US made furniture came from a 50 mile radius of Hickory, NC.

Backfilling jobs was very difficult as those communities had become dependent on semi-skilled manufacturing. What was left were a number of mild-industrial buildings, and abundance of power and water that had been used by both wood cutting, fabric dying operations, and cotton processing.

What has come in since was very unexpected, and for the most part non-beneficial to the local communities. Large technology companies such as Google, Amazon, Apple, and Facebook have set up server farms in western NC. As a result of the infrastructure in place, many have been able to secure 20-30 year tax incentives, employ less than 70 people, and add almost nothing to the local economy.
