I yell louder "How do you assholes feel about being sent to your maker with the last image burned into your brain being my wiener flopping around from the recoil?"

But did he refill the Vaseline? or did the elephant bring his own

Part of the answer would be dependent on the floor layout, number of floors. +

Probably in the early 90's we had a middle of the night wakeup of cars accelerating, sirens, spotlights, etc. Our house was a tri-level, east side facing the front street, west side second story approximately the elevation of the street to the rear of our house, all three bedrooms on the upper level. One set of stairs only. So both sides of the house containing the bedrooms were higher than the main level.

West side lower level, off the kitchen, door to the outside was a tempered glass wooden doorwall, secured. Front door conventional hinged but with a 6'X5' window adjacent to it probably 24" up from the slab.

We hear the police cars and the officer's PREP's, "Setting up a perimeter". As this goes on, they start searching yards. Two kids preteens, wife, two dogs. Secured the dogs in bedrooms, neither would have been much good except to bark, maybe. Stationed myself at the top of the stairs, Remington 870 in hand. Figured that was the most advantageous place to be as if anyone had entered the house they had to either pass by the stairs or to go to the lower level that there was no exit from unless they climbed up to one of three ground level windows.

Result, stolen car chase, multiple agencies involved, multiple perpetrators, three if I remember right. Two were caught very quickly, one a little longer, probably within an hour.

Well, that changes things. I hit the self-destruct timer for 90 seconds. Harness up everyone including the dogs, blow out the bedroom window with preset charges, grab the zip line and go.

We land next to my shed(AKA bunker) jump in the armored SUV that's pre-stocked with weapons, clothes, food, and cash. Then zip out to the safe house. As we exit we blow the preset charges on some trees that fall to block the driveway as we exit the property.

Pretty standard stuff here. Throw us a curve ball and we can get creative.

My house is all one level, with 5 exterior doors.
2600 Sq feet, and I don't think any spot in the house is more than 25 or 30 feet from an exit. Lots of places to bust in, but also lots of places to escape out of if need be!

One of those exits is right in our bedroom. And as for no phone WTF?... We have 3 phones in the room when we are sleeping.

I'd nudge the wife awake telling her to be quiet and grab her robe, shoes and phone and go to the outside door that is just 8 feet from our bed. Meanwhile, I grab my 9mm, flashlight and my cell phone from my night stand. (gun is out of sight in the drawer while I'm in bed) Next I grab my pants from off the chest at the foot of the bed and take them with me. They hold my car keys, gun cabinet keys, wallet and pocket knife . The home cordless phone is on the dresser... and that is on the way out the door onto the patio... where it is very dark with lots of cover, and it's only ~50 yards to the woods, or about 100 feet to the cars.

If time permitted, a shotgun and AR are right there 3 feet from where I sleep locked in a cabinet.

Endeavor to persevere.

How do you use a signal mirror at night or find the stew field without a phone flashlight?

I'll post Part 2 before I go to bed tonight.

Other than the Vaseline, Winchester+top of stairs is still pretty much the plan.

I guess if I hear them heading for the door, I could yell "Pull!"

Arm up, shut the dogs up, take a position of cover, and *LISTEN*.

The dogs now are two Aussie shepherds and a Queensland heeler. They'd bark and raise hell, but do no serious damage. The answer wouldn't have been any different when we had a Witmer-Tyson canine GSD though. One of the things mentioned in canine training is you don't send a dog into a gunfight.

I see a few likely scenarios (assuming no kids as the OP stated):

Bad dudes in the house (though I wouldn't expect them flapping their gums with a dog going off). In this case, send the dog out and he is just going to get shot.

Cops in the house. Send the dog out and he is still likely to just get shot, and as a bonus raise the cop's adrenaline level. Doesn't seem prudent.

Drunk (harmless) dumbasses in the wrong house. They mean no harm and if you do nothing will pass out on the floor or the couch. Sure, you can justify sending the dog based on what little you know initially, but in this case it isn't necessary. Isn't the goal to solve the problem of keeping you and yours safe with minimal necessary violence?

Thanks for this thought exercise. My phone charges a lot faster (and syncs) on my computer in the office between our bedroom and the kids', but I'd have to leave the bedroom and enter the fatal funnel to get to it. My wife's phone is sometimes in the master bath on the charger (easily accessible) and sometimes in her purse at the other end of the house. I see I need to revisit this.

Our reality is a little different being roughly 1.5 miles behind a locked gate with the nearest neighbor roughly a mile as the crow flies. Add in being a volunteer with the SO and them having my number and it is hard to imagine Deputies being in the house without having been called first. If someone is in our house without me knowing about it beforehand, they likely need shot. I'd still want to gather as much information as I could before committing to a course of action not easily reversed.
