Generally they will turn the prey around to eat head first. Sometimes they just screw up. I had a python that would mess it up and it would take him a bit longer to swallow. But I’m guessing since this snake is hanging it was not easily possible to turn the rat around.

lub me some black shankes. that's one bad mofo. great picture too. i didn't know they were THAT skilled, and hungry ! do they also eat cottonmouths ? i doubt it because connmouths are fast and mean, copperheads are slow and friendly. I wish they ate cottonmouths too.
