I currently have a gas 01 Chevy 2500HD Crew cab Long box. With the crazy pricing on theses bigger trucks, I am starting to look elsewhere. I tow a small lightweight fifth wheel camper so I don't need a diesel.

I recently have had an interest in the Nissan Titan XD. The engine specs are more than my current 6.0L gas, but with better fuel efficiency, Oh, and the price is better also.

So, does anyone here have any experience with these, even the Titan itself? I know the XD is not new, but not many out there. And yes, the XD comes in a 5.0 Cummins too, again not interested in diesel!

I work for Nissan and I am the Midwest CPO consultant. I have been in the automotive business for 35 years. The Titan XD is a great truck and as you know, it is much like a 2500 or 3/4 ton truck. The engine and transmission are outstanding and I think the truck is a bargain compared to the domestic HD trucks. I am not too far from retiring and we are buying a trailer and truck to see the parts of the country we have not yet seen. I don't work directly for Nissan so I am not biased toward Nissan and against the other manufacturers. Go drive one and spend a couple hours driving it and get a feel for how it rides without the trailer. I really think you will be impressed and it will do the job you want it to do. Just my 2 cents. If you have any questions, pm me and I will give you my number and would be happy to answer all your questions.

Stay away. There’s reasons why they sell so few of them.

Roll Eyes

You will always find detractors for one reason or another.

I have an older Titan and love it.

Like any vehicle there are always plus and minuses so evaluate it on it's own and compare accordingly.

There has been a decline in Titan sales over the years, no so much as it is inferior or has lots of problems but more to that there is LOTS of competition now.

The one thing I noticed that an old Master Mechanic pointed out to me is that Nissan down the road when there is a problem will simply just advocate or require to buy new parts rather than to a fix or repair solution.
That can get costly.
I don't know if this is unique to Nissan but he pointed out that Ford for example their factory techs would work better with him to find a solution not just put in new parts and hope that fixes the problem.

Anyway the Titan has a lot going for it so check it out an compare to others. Make a decision.

Good Luck

So what you just said is the Titan can’t compete with the other trucks on the market. There are still the same full size truck manufacturers as there were 20 years ago except Toyota. Ford, GM, FCA, etc.

The fact of the matter is the Nissan Titan is no where near the top in reliability, durability and quality. There are better choices. Period.

Major purchases should be made utilizing facts, not emotions.

Looks like you can buy a 2019 F250 XL crew cab for under $35k and the same in an XLT for 45k with 4wd. I'm sure GM has similar models and prices. A vehicle towing at near its maximum ratings won't last as long as one towing well under its maximum ratings. I tow 10k to 15k miles a year with over 50% of that at the max of my truck. Hindsight being what it is, it would have been much cheaper to buy a more capable truck from the start. As it stands now, I'm going to run the wheels off my truck before I replace it.

The Titan XD is a good looking truck, however the discounts reflect the low demand. It's capable, with plenty of power, and you can load it up like a Cadillac inside with options.

Reviews tend to give it a mid level rating, it's not that it's a bad truck overall, its decent enough, plenty of tow capability, but a big thing is that it's features and designs are behind the competition.

The price though may be worth it if you want a loaded up pickup at a big discount.

C&D has a decent enough write up with the faults they found. It's not the low man on the totem pole for no reason, however it would be worth test driving and seeing how much they'll pay you to drive it off of MSRP.

Still, Nissan is a decent company, but maybe better at GTR vehicles...

Personally, I'm not a fan of anything made by Nissan and wouldn't buy any of their models. Their design and engineering is lacking, in my opinion.

I haven't kept up with them lately, but I was considering one of the Gen 1 Titans in the mid/late 2000s, but decided against it after research uncovered a high number of reported mechanical problems, mainly with the rear drivetrain.

I've read that the newer Gen 2 Titans have had some problems as well, including recent issues with their electrical systems shorting and causing fires.

I'd be sure to research whether these various drivetrain/electrical issues have been resolved.

BIL had one for about 6 months last year he bought new. It had numerous problems (I don’t know what kind) and spent a lot of time back at the dealership being worked on. He traded it in on a Silverado 2500.

Nissan is not in the best of financial health...again. Purportedly they'd been sniffing around for bailout funding before Covid-19 hit. So they're likely in more dire straits by now. Their alliance partner Renault doesn't have the resources to save their asses this time around, or simply doesn't want to. The whole Charles Ghosn fiasco is the likely reason, but then Renault has its own lack of money issues dragging them down and is hardly in the position to even attempt to address Nissan's current problems.

I haven't owned a Nissan anything in almost a couple of decades; almost everyone I've known who's owned one of their cars will say that "they're great, but"... I fell into that group myself. My Maxima was a pretty decent car that always seemed like it was a step or two behind its competition. And when it occasionally broke (in similar ways like many cars of that era did), none of the local dealer shops seemed capable of fixing it correctly. Never seemed to be the case with our Hondas and 'Yots'.

Consequently I wound up doing a lot of that work myself. Back then they weren't THAT hard to work on though given the onrush of tech in today's vehicles I tend to doubt that this would be the same today. The only real issue that gave me fits was a sheared head bolt that one dealer shop caused...then denied that it was their doing. Hard getting at that one, which probably is why that shop sought deniability. Otherwise most everything else was manageable.

I've long wondered about the Titan; even considered one early on. The few 'pro' reviews I've come across about this truck over the years seem to be fairly consistent: a capable truck that doesn't particularly distinguish itself from its competition. Mid-pack at best, and bringing up the rear with the most critical of reviews. Take that for what it's worth, but the op/eds seem believable to me based on my own Nissan experiences. Japanese industrial manufacturing culture seems to have a real hard time reinventing itself when it really needs to. And despite having being financially rescued once before, Renault from all appearances couldn't get the ingrained and entrenched systems within Nissan to change and upgrade for the changing times.

Right now I'd be looking at something from the competition. Truck sales (and cars sales in general) can't be that great thanks to the pandemic; I'd think that there should be bargains/bargaining to be had by now. Maybe not as tempting as what's available from panic-stricken Nissan, but also not not as risky as buying from a damaged company either. FWIW.

If you are set on the Titan, perhaps they have a good lease deal, it's got a 5/100 warranty so lease it for 5 or less years, that way everything you need done is paid for by Nissan during the lease.

Buy it out at the end if it's good, or dump it and move on.

HRK makes a good point.

I'm a Nissan fan, with 312K miles on my current one, plus a hundred thousand or so on other older Nissans I've owned.

Mine is not a Titan, so I can't address that directly. One of my best friends has a low-end Titan (not an XD) with over 100K on the meter, and no non-routine-wear problems.

God bless America.

8K, fully loaded.

Thanks everyone for the input so far! I have had real good luck with my Silverado all these years and just might continue. Another thing, in Minnesota, we get raped every year when it comes for license plate tabs.

An example- a 2019-2020 half or 3/4 ton will be somewhere $600-800, every year. It does eventually go down. But, the one tons are $125 or so every year for the lifetime from what I understand, as long as it is not used commercially. If used/registered commercially, then you get raped and must have yearly DOT inspections.

I actually have been looking( approx. a year) at one ton gas in the GM's. They actually are a little cheaper in overall pricing. Even am considering a year or two old under 20k miles. I just thought a lighter truck and a little better mileage would be the shit.

8k, you weren't kidding when you said it was lightweight. The Titan XD will handle that. I'd take one for a test drive and compare it to the other brands.

As far as the registration, are you talking about farm plates or Y plates? There are specific requirements for each that you might want to take a look at.

I love trucks and have driven an F150 crew cab exclusively for almost 20 years. I've read about, watched videos about, and even test driven a Titan a couple times. The conclusion I arrived at was that there is not a single reason I could find to justify buying a Titan over one of its competitors. As a product offering, the Titan has been and continues to be a complete failure for Nissan. Similarly, I'm not a fan of the Toyota Tundra either for a number of reasons, but I can surely recognize how successful an offering its been for Toyota.

With the size of the camper you plan to tow, virtually any properly equipped 1/2 ton truck should be able to handle it without an issue.

I've had mine for about 15 months now. Its night and day difference from our old 2003 F-150 when it comes to towing. Our Airstream weighs around 7.5k dry. I can hardly tell its back there.
