Members of the American Friends Service Committee, a prominent Quaker organization known for its progressive values and social justice advocacy in the U.S. and abroad, have raised an alarm about a woman holding a leadership position within the organization who they say has misrepresented her ethnic background for years and who they fear may be working on behalf of groups seeking to undermine their organization.

Raquel Evita Saraswati, a Muslim activist who for years has encouraged people to believe that she is a woman of color, including Latina as well as of South Asian and Arab descent, is the AFSC’s chief equity, inclusion, and culture officer, a senior position that gives her access to the files of dozens of the organization’s staff and volunteers. But Saraswati, who was born Rachel Elizabeth Seidel, is not a person of color, according to her mother, Carol Perone.

“I call her Rachel,” Perone told The Intercept, when reached by telephone. “I don’t know why she’s doing what she’s doing.”…

“I’m German and British, and her father was Calabrese Italian,” her mother added. “She’s chosen to live a lie, and I find that very, very sad.”

Raquel/Rachel did convert to Islam in high school so that much of her identity is real

DEI has become a big business

Oskar Pierre Castro, who led the search committee to fill the DEI position, described how Raquel/Rachel seemed like an ideal candidate.

Castro added, “In my mind it was, ‘Great, a person of color, a queer person of color, who happens to be a Muslim, it’s a woman, all these things, and someone who seemed to get it. I definitely feel conned. … I feel deceived.”

I guess she is covering some of the bases.

Because she is a commie and lying is an ingrained trait.

These characteristics are far more important than honesty, integrity, competency, and ethics.

When using acronyms the acronym should first be listed in full to ensure the reader has a clear understanding of its meaning.

To be clear to the reader, your post should have been as follows:
Divisive, Exclusionary, Indoctrination (DEI)… I haven’t seen those initials since they pulled out!

From the linked article - "The Intercept notes that the DEI has become a big buisness very quickly and, as a result, the qualifications and backgrounds of people claiming jobs are sometimes not looked at as carefully as they should be."

I understand the argument that people are in a hurry. But I think it suggests two other things. The first is that our corporate/advocacy group/government leaders are no more "woke" in the way they understand things than anyone else is and that "equity and inclusion" are consequently nothing more to them than buzzwords on a long check list. The second is that when we start elevating sacred cows to positions of real authority, it's kinda hard to ask a sacred cow to prove she's a sacred cow.

Wait a minute. We are told that being minority is oppressing and whites are the oppressors. Then why are so many white people claiming to be minorities?

Mental illness comes in many forms, at least a high level of derangement.

There’s nothing mentally ill about claiming to be a member of a group that enjoys benefits that other people don’t have. At one time in this country, the term “pass” among Americans of some African heritage meant that someone whose racial characteristics were close enough to those of northern Europeans could pass themselves off as something other than Black. At that time there were benefits for doing so, and therefore some people understandably took advantage of their looks to do that, just as some people take advantage of their looks today to achieve some advantage.

There’s no reason to believe that it was mental illness that prompted Elizabeth Warren to claim some aboriginal American heritage. Even if she had no reason to believe her claim was valid, which I suspect was true, she certainly had good reasons to make it in certain situations. How many people falsely claim an inflated level of education or certain military service? If I bought a fake diploma supposedly from a college that closed 30 years ago to give me a leg up on getting some mid-level job, would that make me crazy?

The woman we’re discussing here probably just demonstrated how clever she is by making bogus claims that no one was likely to ever question, much less try to confirm. We wouldn’t expect that being a gay Muslim would be a benefit in most circumstances, but it could be—and was—for her in this specific situation.

Funny, I thought it was how one identified that mattered, not their real race, creed, color, sex, etc. I'm so confused.

It's ok for a guy to claim he is a woman to steal a trophy in an athletic event. What is the difference here?

Is "Arab" not also "Caucasian"? I know that Jews are considered a different race, but not sure why. Are Arabs also considered separate? Iranians? (At least Farsi is an Indo-European language.)
