Coincident with smithnsig reviving this thread, my wife this morning reposted this. Note from the OP read, in part: "A beach in the 70's." "America is at that awkward stage. I think sugar intake is the scapegoat to take our minds off the more serious, actual, problem and that is all the artificial ingredients, additives and preservatives that are now added to our food. Take bread for example. When I was growing up in the 40's and 50's the basic ingredients for bread were flour, yeast, salt and water. Now, it takes 3 minutes just to read the ingredients label and, the stuff they add to process just the flour is downright scarey. Some of these additives are even prohibited in Europe and China, of all places. Considering the fact that just about everything we eat these days has an ingredient list as long as your arm, maybe these pinheads trying to justify their grant money should focus more on the affects of all these food additives. _____________________________ "The problems we face today exist because the people who work for a living are outnumbered by those who vote for a living." As a type 2 diabetic I have found that drinking a real Coke (made with sugar, not corn syrup) is better than drinking a Diet Coke. The reason for this is many of the sugar substitutes actually inhibit the body's ability to use the insulin it produces or the insulin someone like me would inject (I use a 24 hour long lasting insulin). Sugar in moderation is not a health risk for me, but like anything it has to be in moderation. One needs to remember that the body processes alcohol by turning it into sugar. Also one needs to remember anything with an 'ose at the end is a sugar (i.e. glucose, fructose, sucrose, lactose). I think the bigger problem than sugar intake is the fact that we as a society have become more sedentary. We need to get off our seats and move our feets. __________________________ More blessed than I deserve. http://davesphotography7055.zenfolio.com/f238091154

Yep. When I was diagnosed with that 13% A1C earlier this year, my first thought was denial: I'm a thin, healthy guy, who doesn't drink alcohol, soda or go to fast food restaurants. But then I recalled: I had injured my knee running a couple of years ago, and had to stop while it recovered. Well, it recovered, but I didn't start running again. I'd become complacent, and realized I was eating a ton of crap. A single guy, it was easy for me to have pizza, microwave foods, and that big bowl of ice cream every night (there were times I'd have four different flavors in the freezer!). Thin? I've since dropped 20 pounds since I changed my dietary ways and started running again. My A1C is down almost to the non-diabetic range. I don't eat ice cream, but I make "nice cream," from frozen bananas, fresh fruit, vanilla extract and nut milk. My breakfast consists of sliced banana, peach, strawberries, blueberries, mango and some fresh baby spinach. I think the key is the glycemic index and insulin resistance. In my case, I didn't fit the profile of the overweight, sedentary diabetic, but I had similar behaviors. I still eat pizza, but not as often. I still have bread, but whole grain and not white. I do a lot more of my own cooking (and save $$$ as a nice side benefit!), and am healthier as a result. You can't truly call yourself "peaceful" unless you are capable of great violence. If you're not capable of great violence, you're not peaceful, you're harmless. NRA Benefactor/Patriot Member

Interesting. What is your glucose peak after real Coke vs Diet (assuming no other carb intake with it)?

a 12 ounce coke only has about 60 carbs. My glucose might go up to 180-195 after a Coke if I started at 150-160 glucose. If I drink a diet coke the next day my fasting glucose will be higher (say 30-40 points) than if I didn't drink a diet coke. If I am exercising before or after the real Coke then I don't have too much difference in my glucose level at all as in a couple years ago I took a 51.6 mile bike ride and at the 25 mile mark had a cheeseburger (50 carbs for bread, and some for the condiments), fries (probably 100-150 carbs), and a 20 ounce Coke (corn syrup variety which so about 120 carbs), and when I got home my glucose was under 100 due to burning the excess calories/carbs for fuel. __________________________ More blessed than I deserve. http://davesphotography7055.zenfolio.com/f238091154
