Absolutely hardest thing we ever had to do; I dread the day Mom and Dad have to take their current border collies in for their last vet visit.

That seems like a reasonable explanation, thanks.

Dad was a vet. I held many pets during the actual deed. Each one a hell of an experience. Especially when the pet is yours.....

I'm not leaving my little furry buddy to die alone with strangers if I can all avoid that.

My other half has had a few put down with only her in the room, and for some reason that's worse for me.

I've always been with them. Rarely felt a greater sense of obligation.

The last one was a the result of a sudden seizure that they could not stop following a couple years of cognitive decline at 15 years of age. By the time it was over the wife, son, daughter, myself, Doc and two vet techs were all crying. It is always the worst of days.

Exactly. If you cannot, or will not do this, don't even THINK about getting a pet.

2 respondents answered "no, I hand over the pet and depart." I'd like to know their reasoning behind that.

We have lost dogs this year including our incredibly beloved pit bull last month who was rescued by us 7 years ago at the Austin Animal Shelter when she was 6 years old already. She went with me everywhere. She was our protector. Her health declined rapidly over the past 2 months and I couldn't let her suffer any more. She was around 60 pounds, they brought a stretcher out but I carried her in and stayed until her last breaths.

Being there at the end is just part of the obligation you owe them for the years of unconditional love they have given.
I cannot imagine not being there for them at the end and if the vet would not allow it I would have a different vet.

What PHPaul said. It's very hard, but I could never let my trusted friends die without me there for them.

My wife and I go in with them. Our most recent may have been out toughest....6 year old greyhound diagnosed with a rare cancer. In 10 days she went from jumping into the back of the 4Runner to paralyzed in the rear, incontinent, and weakness spreading to the front with a lot of pain. My wife and I spent 3 1/2 hours with her before the pain meds wore off so it was time. We could not imagine having NOT done that. She had us there with her for a long time, and she was comfortable. Just dropping off an animal...can't imagine it.

During COVID the local vet would have you wait in your car in the parking lot. The tech would come to your car, retrieve your animal, and take them inside for their treatment, etc. When done, the tech would bring your animal back to your car.

I had to send our dog over the rainbow bridge. The tech came to the car at the appointed time and said "would you like carry Dutchess in?" "Yes" was my reply and they let me stay with her to the end.

That's deep and so true. My eyes are getting wet thinking about how I'll have to do that.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." I answered no but it’s not the best answer. Growing up on the farm we simply put them down ourselves.

Having gotten a bit older I’ll still do this when local laws permit.

Still sucks but it’s the “old yeller” lesson from growing up.
