https://dnyuz.com/2024/03/11/a...insurance-companies/ Kenn Dahl says he has always been a careful driver. The owner of a software company near Seattle, he drives a leased Chevrolet Bolt. He’s never been responsible for an accident. So Mr. Dahl, 65, was surprised in 2022 when the cost of his car insurance jumped by 21 percent. Quotes from other insurance companies were also high. One insurance agent told him his LexisNexis report was a factor. LexisNexis is a New York-based global data broker with a “Risk Solutions” division that caters to the auto insurance industry and has traditionally kept tabs on car accidents and tickets. Upon Mr. Dahl’s request, LexisNexis sent him a 258-page “consumer disclosure report,” which it must provide per the Fair Credit Reporting Act. What it contained stunned him: more than 130 pages detailing each time he or his wife had driven the Bolt over the previous six months. It included the dates of 640 trips, their start and end times, the distance driven and an accounting of any speeding, hard braking or sharp accelerations. The only thing it didn’t have is where they had driven the car. On a Thursday morning in June for example, the car had been driven 7.33 miles in 18 minutes; there had been two rapid accelerations and two incidents of hard braking. According to the report, the trip details had been provided by General Motors — the manufacturer of the Chevy Bolt. LexisNexis analyzed that driving data to create a risk score “for insurers to use as one factor of many to create more personalized insurance coverage,” according to a LexisNexis spokesman, Dean Carney. Eight insurance companies had requested information about Mr. Dahl from LexisNexis over the previous month. “It felt like a betrayal,” Mr. Dahl said. “They’re taking information that I didn’t realize was going to be shared and screwing with our insurance.” more at link _________________________ "Sometimes I wonder whether the world is being run by smart people who are putting us on or by imbeciles who really mean it." Car insurance companies are sharing customer driving habits with anyone who comes calling with cash in hand or a government ID. Those plug in dongles that cut your rates by some percentage, EVERYTHING about your driving is recorded, speed, location, duration, and G forces achieved during acceleration, cornering, and braking. Take one drive down the Trail of the Dragon and you'll not only lose that discount you will also lose your safe driving discount for going accident and citation free for 7-10 years. I've stopped counting.

It will be all the car companies and it gets much bigger from there. It will be your entire online profile and many other aspects of your life. The aim is to eventually have a social credit score along the likes of China or as much as the apathetic American public allows.

No. Cars like to Bolt and almost all that receive any sort of update over the air from the manufacturer are constant sending your driving data back to the manufacturer. You opted in when you purchased the car. ———————————————— The world's not perfect, but it's not that bad. If we got each other, and that's all we have. It's my understanding Tesla does this. Not clear how to turn it off. One reason why I won't buy (there are several). Note I was told by my insurance agent about all the spying that goes hand in hand with those "discount" dongles. And you do "opt in" when you sign up for the things. I'll also note that when I purchased my Fiesta ST I got the base model without the "Nav" system. As a result I have one of the few late models cars not equipped with a Modem. Note, it was originally a cheapskate move which is a habit for me but it's a bit rewarding to know that I am the only person who knows it when I take it over the Ton. I've stopped counting.

It’s probably already happening. This article talks mostly about GM since everyone knows about Onstar but most if not all other manufacturers data collect and no one really knows how much they share. Your car might be secretly recording every drive you take — and sending data to your insurance company (msn.com) Story by nnaughton@insider.com (Nora Naughton) March 11, 2024 Connected-car services might be sharing your data with insurance companies. Drivers told The New York Times about massive reports on their driving habits. GM's OnStar Smart Driver program is a focus of the report. Your driving habits aren't as private as you think they are, according to a recent report from The New York Times. Internet-connected vehicles can gather data on driving habits, including hard braking and rapid accelerations, and share that information with the data broker LexisNexis, which works with insurance companies to create personalized coverage. One Chevrolet Bolt owner who spoke with the Times said he uncovered a 258-page report on his driving habits when he inquired about a 21% increase in his insurance costs. Other owners in the story reported the same experience: Insurance costs skyrocketed, and when they inquired about what was going on, the insurance companies encouraged them to check their LexisNexis reports. General Motors' OnStar Smart Driver service is a focus of the Times report. Some drivers who were enrolled in Smart Driver told the Times that their insurance costs went up. GM has offered connected OnStar services for decades. It's historically been used to connect drivers to emergency services and navigation. https://www.msn.com/en-us/mone...28818f5911d69&ei=105

I opted out of that crap when I got my 2018 GMC Sierra in December of 2017. It was all in the setup for the vehicle.

While back predicted this was coming, the data is worth more than the profit per car over time. Everything today is about recording and selling information. Won't be long Waze, Garmin, all these GPS devices will be in on the game, anyone with data on driving will be suppling it to a central house, you won't get the option to opt out unless someone can sue and win in court over privacy concerns. The problem will be you won't be able to buy, own, lease and run a vehicle until you agree, just like the apps on a phone. At some point insurance companies won't insure you until you have a driving score recorded.

I have to wonder when they started doing this crap? I have a 2007 Toyota Camry and a 2011 Toyota Tacoma. Were they doing this back then? Makes me wonder when toilets will start recording when you take a dump and send the info to your health insurance. --------------- Gary Will Fly for Food... and more Ammo Mosquito Lubrication Video If Guns Cause Crime, Mine Are Defective.... I've always taken a skeptical view of new tech. I don't want the latest iphone, and I won't drive cars with data links. I will not comply. If that means I can't get car insurance, I can actually post a bond to be in minimum compliance with the law. Or... I can drive without it like every illegal alien. At some point you have to put your foot down. "Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible." -- Justice Janice Rogers Brown "The United States government is the largest criminal enterprise on earth." -rduckwor

How is all this data getting recorded and how is it transferred? A leased car might be more problematic to disable than one you own.

This sums it up perfectly. No one here should be surprised by this. Just wait until folks find out how insurance companies are using the services of companies like EarthNow. I kind of like the idea of having a bond in place of a policy buy it once, and you don't have to futz with it if your car is paid for, and you don't care, even more of a reason to dump insurance and if they moan, bitch and complain, get a policy from them for the sum of $1
