Hi, all.

This spring we are planning to install a walkway around the back corner of our home from the top of our driveway to the stairs at our back deck. It will be a stone paver walkway about 40 feet in length, 3 feet wide, and curved essentially making a 90 degree left-hand turn. The grade is relatively flat, with perhaps 6-8" of elevation change from start to finish. There is no plan for a step down anywhere on the path.

At this back corner of our home is a downspout where rain water currently just naturally falls away from the house exiting the spout about 4 feet away from the foundation. The excavation being done for the new walkway will be about 9 inches deep consisting of 5" compacted stone, 1" quarry waste stone, and 1" concrete sand, followed by the pavers.

We need to bury the downspout pipe under the walkway and have it exit into the grass on the exterior edge of the curved walkway. My main question is what should be at the end of the pipe? It's been suggested that a "popup" adapter be used on the end. But I am concerned about water not emptying fully and freezing temps. The grade is relatively flat, but I do think a pipe could likely just exit out into the grass open-ended, or with some sort of removable mesh to prevent things from crawling inside. The other option given was a small drainage pit with weed barrier and drainage stone at he end of the pipe.

For those who have experience in this area, what option would you recommend? Thanks for your time.

Chris

I used 4" PVC For this same purpose and used one of these at the end.

Pop ups have drain holes in the bottom to bleed off any remaining water.

I have two on my property and never had freezing issues.

Some stone under them helps as well.

I have both the square box style and the round style at my house. I much prefer the square because it's easier to clean out both the catch basin and the pipe. I like this better than terminating the pipe to daylight because the water just spills over the top of the basin so there's no erosion and grass doesn't clog the opening.

We use this small catch basin with the top like you posted above. I drill a couple of holes in the bottom of the catch basin to allow it to drain completely so it doesn’t become a mosquito breeding area.
