This one requires shipping to an FFL, so can't be local cash and carry. If I need to go money order, is USPS the only way to go?

I get fake cashiers checks once or twice a year.

I would accept a usps money order and cash it before sending the goods. Don't deposit it. If it turns out to be illegitimate, deposited cashier's check funds can be withdrawn from your account.

I won't take anything that requires depositing, so they could debit my account if it turns out to be fake. If the guy sends me a cashier's check from Chase or Wells Fargo, I can just go to the local branch and cash it, right? Ditto for the post office, if a postal MO, right? Of course, I wouldn't ship until funds are totally cleared.

With a copy of the sender's DL and their phone number, it should be easy to see if they are 'for real'. Mailing a bad check is a federal offense. Mailing a fake bad check is a Double No-No. Plus their identity will be confirmed by the FFL upon transfer of the firearm.

But like they say, if you are asking the questions in the first place, something is disrupting your comfort level.

The bank may require you deposit the funds; asking for a Bank Check drawn by a bank with which you do business seems safe and fast.

Electronic transfer is quickest and most secure, IMHO.

Yeah, not gonna deposit anything, as it could then be pulled back if later found to be fake. And then I wouldn't know how long to wait to ship. I've heard banks will say a cashier's check is good, has cleared and then, weeks later, they pull the funds back when it turns out it was bogus.

Yes- They clear it off your account and will take the money back at anytime afterwards if the check is bad.

A USPS Money Order.

or

Take the check to a Check Cashing Store- They will verify the funds, cash the check and give you the money for a fee.

Keep in mind that the post office cashes USPS money orders out of the day's cash. If the cashier has not taken in enough cash that day they cannot cash your money order.

Zelle would be a better way, it hits your account virtually immediately, has no fees, and is endorsed by major banks like CHase.

I would also say USPS money order unless it was from someone I knew or trusted. This forum is one of the only exceptions to that rule on the former as the latter is implied.

I've just never had a problem doing gun deals before. I've done some trades by mail where we each just mailed our guns to each other's FFLs with no money exchanged. Never an issue. But I just find it a little weird that someone wants my gun, which is kind of common, and to go through the hassle of shipping and a 4473. I looked on Armslist in the buyer's area and there are none just like mine, but several cheaper and not as nice. Maybe he's just really picky.

Can you set up the deal so that you wait for funds to clear before shipping? Could be a week or so.

Not always immediately I’ve had a few transactions not show up for almost a week.

That's the only way I'll be doing this. Not even gonna deposit. Will cash the check or MO and that's it. Waiting for his reply.

Is this your 80% gun that you had a previous thread?

I only accept USPS money order(s), certified bank check or good ol' US currency when face to face. There are to many scams going on.

If people would mind their own damn business this country would be better off. I owe no one an explanation or an apology for my personal opinion.

Do you have a national bank that has a branch in the purchasers area? Have him either buy a cashiers check at your bank and deposit the cashiers check directly into your account, or deposit the money into your account and as soon as it clears ship it.

Can you get the check before the goods are released? If so, call the issuing branch and verify.
